Wed 7th February 9.30am : Kinnordy - loch frozen except for small area opposite East hide that held most of the wildfowl around, including the drake SMEW. From the Gullery hide, the BITTERN was spectacularly sunning itself at the edge of the reedbeds opposite. On the way home, flock of 100+ BRAMBLING at road end of Mains of Coul Farm

Received a phone call from a farming friend who was ploughing a field at an Angus location this afternoon, he counted 11 Red Kites and 23 Buzzards along the furrow ..... and no Gulls !

I also had c20 Bramblings at Auchindorie Farm feeding in the Beech strip above the farm and a brief view of the drake Smew at Kinnordy before he disappeared beyond the reedbed.

I was up in Kirriemuir for a few days visiting my father. These are the highlights of my visit. We arrived 14th February and were in Kirrie until 17th.

At Kinnordy we saw the drake smew on the 15th from the gullery hide. There were also a couple of male goosander. A lot of the loch was frozen over the number of whooper swans fell as the loch froze up.

There were lots of wigeon duck, tufted duck, goldeneye and teal. A few gadwall as well.
In between the hides there were some tree sparrows around the feeders. Heard a couple of great spotted woodpecker.
Out on the bogbean were lapwings, oystercatcher and a few snipe.
We found a couple of fieldfare in a field in front of kinnordy house. Also saw a redwing one day.
A couple of buzzards were displaying over the loch.
One day we saw a stonechat outside the gullery hide, a bird I have not seen at Kinnordy before.
We found a large flock of redpoll and some bullfinches one day.

Forfar Loch had lots of goosander and goldeneye on it.

At Lintrathen there was a large gull roost which were mainly herring and common gulls. Lots of wigeon duck here and some goldeneye. We found bullfinches, redpoll and siskins.

At Lunan Bay we saw a few long-tailed ducks and lots of common scoter. Counted around 20 red throated diver on the sea and some razorbills and guillemots.

At the Montrose Basin visitor centre we found a little egret and the kingfisher was showing well. There was a greenshank, oystercatcher, curlews and turnstones. On the feeders there was a yellowhammer, reed bunting, tree sparrow, greenfinch and goldfinch.

We walked the river at Cortachy and found some dippers on the river there.
At Cadam Wood on the edge of Kirriemuir we found a large flock of brambling on Saturday.
We did a small walk from Pearsie on Saturday afternoon and found a magpie.

Bullfinches have visited our garden on The Law every day since 8 February to feed on buds of wild cherry trees, and recently on the peanut feeder. Blackcaps are also daily visitors, mainly to fat blocks. This recent cold spell has even brought long-tailed tits to the feeders this week.
