Kinpurney Hill, Hobby?

Postby Stephen Appleton » Wed Jul 04, 2018 6:07 pm

Can't be 100% certain, but fairly sure I disturbed a Hobby as I descended Kinpurney Hill (near Newtyle) last evening, approx. 20:15.

Easthaven and Craigmill Den

Postby Alex Shepherd » Mon Jul 09, 2018 7:22 pm

Upcoming Club Trip - Easthaven and Craigmill Den, Wednesday 11th, meet at Easthaven 0930 am.

I did a survey today to get a feel for what's around south of Easthaven and Craigmill Den and was pleasantly surprised to find more species and larger numbers than I'd expected. There's a likelihood that more waders will be present to the north, various species were seen in a brief look last Friday.

An abridged list; 136 Curlew, 61 Goosander, 72 Oystercatcher, 23 Mallard, 25 Great Black-backed Gull, Common Gulls, Black-headed Gulls, 3 Grey Heron, Redshanks, Dunlins, Sandwich Tern, Cormorants, Common Sandpipers, Grey Wagtails, Common Whitethroat, Swallows, House Martins, Swifts, Magpie, Pied Wagtails, Collared Dove, Stock Doves and my first since early spring, a Kingfisher.

Some photos here, https://aberbrothock.blogspot.com/

This Grey Wagtail was in the shade at the weir with another or maybe two.

Date & Time: Tuesday 17th July 2018
Species: Peregrine Falcon, Sparrowhawk
Details: At around 3:30pm an adult and juvenile Peregrine Falcon were calling loudly and plucking a feral pigeon on the radio mast at the Arbroath police station.
Sparrowhawks seem very active at moment presumably feeding youngsters. 6 different individuals seen in 2 days at various locations around Angus. Including one that took a juvenile starling from my garden feeders 8am.

Fishtown of Usan 1pm

A group of at least 25 Manx Shearwater were on the water feeding today, just beyond the buoys. Going by the Mackerel being caught by a fisherman off the rocks there seems to be plenty fish out there just now.

ADBC Outing to Forfar Loch, Murton, Balgavies and beyond.
Led by Jonathan Pattullo

A total of 84 species seen today; highlights included Ospreys,Redstarts, Garden Warbler & Spotted Flycatcher at Balgavies. Great-crested grebes & Bullfinch at Forfar Loch then Little Ringed Plovers, Dunlin, Barnacle Goose and Sparrowhawk at Murton.
After this we headed to Arbroath to get good views of the adult Mediterranean Gull which had been reported from there on our ADBC Grapevine.
Last stop was at the Lurgies, Montrose Basin to look for the summer plumage Little Stint. It was refound by Alex Shepherd and everyone had good views before it flew off.

Little Stint, probably still at the Lurgies today (95%), also Ruff and 5 Black-tailed Godwits one with four colour rings reported to the ringers.

The photo is not the bird currently at the Lurgies but one photographed there in June 2017. I thought it would provide an idea of what to look for if anyone else has the patience to seek it out. Despite being nearer to the camera it still looks much smaller than the Dunlin behind. A well known birder to some of us was there for 10 hours on and off today looking!

AGV Messages

Postby Mark Caunt » Wed Jul 25, 2018 7:46 pm

Apologies to anyone who has found their AGV message delivery a little sketchy of late.

The app updated 6 months ago and since then its been a little hap hazard. Initially I put it down to bad signal or recipients network provider.
But when a few folk didn't get the messages over the last week, further investigation was needed.
So I use an iPhone and everyone who uses an iPhone will have probably got the texts ok. It seems the app is meant to determine if you use an iPhone and if so you get an iMessage. If you use an android phone (why havent you bought Apple? :P ) the app is meant to detect that and send you a SMS text instead of an imessage.
This hasnt been the case though! Must be a bug in the app. So with this in mind Ive turned off iMessage and all recipients will just receive normal sms text messages! Thanks to Alex Shepherd for input and being a guinea pig!

Sorry for the inconvenience and I hope that it hasn't been too frustrating. Do not hesitate to contact me if you are having problems receiving texts.
Thanks for your support!
Regards Mark
