Cruel Nature

Postby Alex Shepherd » Fri Sep 21, 2018 12:18 pm

I watched helplessly on Thursday as a Great Black-backed Gull at the Lurgies caught, disabled and ate a juvenile Shelduck whilst the poor Shelduck was still alive. I did video some of the early stages of the attack which lasted 20 minutes before the Shelduck succumbed and I've posted it at the link below. Definitely not for the faint-hearted and I won't say anymore about the eventual outcome except it's not in this video. This is the largest prey I've seen taken alive by a Great Black-backed Gull, the Shelduck looked to be the size of an adult Mallard or more.

The video was filmed in UHD (3840*2160) with a DSLR and 300mm lens and edited by cropping down to HD (1920*1080), a bit shaky on a tripod in strong wind.

https://youtu.be/GH0mBaPQm5o

Also and seen in the background, around 400 Pink-footed Geese which came in from inland fields in small groups.

Today, 21/9/2018 at Easthaven, a strong and constant southerly passage of Swallows and House Martins with Meadow Pipits in smaller numbers. Also Bar-tailed Godwits and a small flock of Golden Plover flying inland.

Was in Arbroath a week ago Alex and was sitting in the hairdressers looking out the window when a Herring Gull caught and started eating a feral pigeon. A lot of shaking and wings flying (amongst other things) while people were walking past just a few feet away trying to pretend they couldn't see it.

White bird on Forfar Loch this morning across from Rugby Pitch. Me and my father thought it was a Long Tail Duck , but looking at the above, perhaps it was a guillemot....
