Very obliging Tawny Owls this morning. (See photo thread )

First at North West corner of Den Of Ogil Reservoir

Second just beside east hide at Kinnordy.

Also saw HUGE raptor off south bank at Den Of Ogil (on the hills behind the marshy area where the Lapwing and Curlew breed - if someone wants to look!!)

05/06/2010 Elliot 618388 lots of male Reed Buntings around which I presume are waiting for female to hatch eggs, Skylarks and Meadow Pipits carrying food, Swallows and House Martins busy feeding young, Starlings have fledged and are noisily in the ferns, and nature at its best or worst as you see it, a male Yellowhammer happily singing on a bush when a Crow came in and took it away into fir trees on edge of golf course, a meal for some lucky youngster

06/06/2010 RM Condor West 616439 Lost a good few chicks to Gulls, Stoats and Weasels some Oystercatchers are now back on nests trying again. I thought they only did one brood, if so these must be late layers or perhaps trying for a second time

As part of Tayside Biodiversity I am trying to establish where Sand Martins are nesting within the region. Many of you are doing BTO Atlas tetrads and you`re all out and about but I`d appreciate it if you could find the time to pass on this information. I`m looking for Grid Ref,name of location, no. of pairs present, established or new site and habitat eg quarry, river bank, drainage hole etc. Please send details even if it`s an obvious site ( though you can omit Broughty Ferry SM banks!) to me direct at ianford0705@aol.com or post here. Thanks Ian

Just sent in my RSPB "make nature count" return, surprising what you see in an hour in your own garden(I included as far as I could see with the naked eye too).Wonder how many got an oystercather sat on their roof or Buzzard flying overhead. We have nesting wren, blackbird, songthrush and house sparrows.Robin and jackdaw next door,18 species in all.More than I saw on a walk to the Redcastle hide and back, though maybe not so exotic.Tree sparrows, yellowhammer, fulmar, dunnock, carrion crow.

June 13th Glen Lethnot & Glen Esk.

Postby Barry Farquharson » Mon Jun 14, 2010 5:55 pm

Made a return visit to Glen Lethnot to let a friend see Cuckoos and Ring Ouzel. Plenty Cuckoos around in the same area as Saturday. Got 2 adult and 1 younster Ring Ouzel too. Saw 2 Whinchat on Sunday, a Red Legged Partridge, Pheasants with 3 chicks, a pair of Red Grouse with 2 youngsters. Grey and Pied Wagtail plus a pair of Common Sandpipers and a female Goosander were also seen.

Headed into Glen Esk later in the day to try and get Redstart. Picked up 1 male bird. Also Redshank atop a telegraph pole, and Snipe on an electricity pole. Lots of Wheatear, a couple of Great Spotted Woodpeckers, 3 Cuckoos perched together, Common Sandpiper, Goldfinch and loads of Mistle Thrush too. Weather was pretty dismal, so we were stuck in the car but still managed to see a lot. Another good day.

Roundyhill. Interestingly, following the successful fledging of two tawny owlets, we now have 2 or 3 fledgeling Long-eareds within 100 yards of the tawnies. I expected the tawnies to become dominant when they moved in and the LEO's to be driven out but they are both breeding ok. Perhaps tolerance depends on prey availabilty?
