Goshawks

Postby Clive McKay » Thu Mar 17, 2011 11:39 pm

Dear all

The next three weeks is the best time of year to locate displaying Goshawks. Worth a look in any of the wooded Angus Glens or larger lowland plantations. Saw a male in an Angus glen today mobbing a passing ringtail Hen Harrier. As Goshawk co-ordinator for the Tay Raptor Study group, I'd appreciate any sightings clive.mckay@btinternet.com or send details to Jon Cook so that we can build up a picture for the county. However, please don't publicise sites on the grapevine. The slow wing-flapping flight (a bit like a displaying Oystercatcher) is very distinctive at the moment.

Cheers

Clive

White Tailed Sea Eagle.

Postby Colin Black » Fri Mar 18, 2011 12:43 am

17th March Balgavies.
At the view point Buzzard and 12+ Bullfinches. At the hide pair GS Woodpeckers, Chaffinches, Blue, Great, Coal and Long Tailed Tits. On a tree to the left of the hide immature White Tailed Sea Eagle (wing tags turquoise with white X), we think this is a small male 2009 bird – turquoise X aka (Hamish). After doing a circuit of the loch flew off towards Rescobie. Have pics and video will show at next meeting.
Pat & Colin.

SPRING FINALLY HERE!?!?!?

Postby jhodson1 » Mon Mar 21, 2011 3:49 pm

First sign of spring yesterday (20/3) - had 2 long tailed tit nests in gorse at the western end of Carnoustie. Nests were N3 and N4 and birds were active at both. The nests are about 200 metres apart, suggesting a possible small cluster of nesting activity. This would correlate with my experiences in Wakefield.
A pair of buzzard were displaying on the hillside above.

Collared Doves

Postby joncook » Sat Mar 26, 2011 7:25 pm

Hi Iain,
Interesting, I was thinking the same. Normally see them regularly in & around the garden. Checked & last seen here 29th Jan 2011. Plenty of courting Wood Pigeon as usual. Did see one Collared Dove near Ethie this week.
Had a look on BirdTrack, number of Collared Dove sightings nationally are down this year compared to 2009 & 10 and sightings have dropped off since the start of the year. Would be good to know why.
Jon
