Hobby

Postby Dave Adam » Sat Jul 23, 2011 6:50 pm

Hobby # 1 in lower Glen Mark, 9.30am. This Hobby certainly upset all other birds in the area, especially Mistle Thrushes, Swallows & Martins, more so than a Sparrow Hawk by comparison. Not common up here but unmistakable - those sickle wings just go on for ever.
Kestrels # 3 in upper Glen Mark.
Found an eagle pellet on Wolf Craig, very windy on tops.
Good no's of Red Grouse.

PS Passing Stirling on motorway - Red Kite working the fields.

Elliot 24/07/2011 Found juvenile Sedge Warblers and Willow Warblers. Plenty of Sedge and Reed Buntings calling. Swallow and House Martins in plenty feeding off the insect life over the vegetation. Lots of Sandwicher Terns off shore. Swans have moved their 2 Cygnets from mill pond into larger pond.

Hobby

Postby joncook » Sun Jul 24, 2011 6:25 pm

Great to hear that there are Hobbies about. Time perhaps for a wee reminder that Hobby is one of the rarer species for which a description is required. The list of these species is too long to reproduce here but can be found in the Angus & Dundee Bird Report, page 86 of the 2007 edition. The Scottish Bird Report and Angus & Dundee Bird Report will only include records for these species if they have been accepted by the appropriate committee. Assessment of a record requires a full written description to be provided by the observer. Forms for this purpose are available on the SOC website: http://www.the-soc.org.uk/sbrc-form.htm, or from the County Recorder. These should be emailed by the observer to the County Recorder (Jon Cook - 1301midget@tiscali.co.uk) in the first instance. He will forward them to the correct committee and advise the observer of the outcome. If the bird was photographed it is most helpful to include one or more images.
Thanks
Jon

Sunday 24th July : Climbed Broad Cairn this morning. Saw five ptarmigan among the rocky scree. Disappointingly, no sign of any youngsters with them.

1st August

Kinnaber, Montrose.

Fine views this afternoon of 3 cuckoos feeding together on what appeared to be caterpillars. They were perching on the ranch fencing 100m south of Woodfield Cottage (NO 728610). They seemed unconcerned at my presence only 20m away. Every so often one would hop off the fence and alight on the ground to capture a caterpillar etc.

An unusual sight this afternoon - an older juvenile gannet drifted backwards from the Rossie Spit, across the front of the wildlife centre before coming to the shore near the adjacent field of ponies. It had a snooze and then walked onto the shore for a preen. Disappearred behind the shoreline once the tide near its peak.

Golden Eagle

Postby Dave Adam » Mon Aug 08, 2011 10:24 pm

Going back to May , an immature, un-ringed G.Eagle was found by walkers in Glen Mark near the Queen's Well. It died of natural causes and parts of its talons were damaged/missing. A possible cause of its death has been put forward by RSPB - a confrontation with a resident eagle. Hope that the damage was not caused by a spring trap.

1 Little Egret and 1 Green Sandpiper present at The Lurgies on Saturday pm (6th). A tagged Juv Marsh Harrier (yellow tag marked with 'X' - presumably from Tay reedbeds or Kinnordy?) there on Sunday morning, plus the Little Egret still. Plenty of Greenshanks both days (probably c.15 on Saturday), but the Spoonbills seemed to be absent both times.

August 13th: Kinnaber

Out walking the dog this morning, by the derelict fishermen's hut at the end of the track which passes Woodman's Cottage I disturbed a bird of prey. I've seen Kestrel, Sparrowhawk and Buzzard frequently around here and also cuckoo in recent days. This seemed different. I only got a fleeting look and didn't have binoculars with me (always a fatal mistake) but it was a hawk very like a sparrowhawk but very much larger and with a powerful pounding muscular flight as it flew away from me low over the dune grassland with that weaving, hopping hawk-like pattern of flight. I report this as just an outside possibility so that people keep a look-out!!!
