Postby Dave Adam » Thu Aug 09, 2012 6:52 pm

Hill walk to Peat Hill, Glen Lethnot on Sunday 12th August as part of the campaign involving Nathro Hill Wind Farm. Meet Blairno Farm (big white house) at 11am. No dogs.
I know it is not the right place for this post but this might give a chance for some hill top bird watching! info; http://www.swanag.org.uk

Big counts

Postby simonbusuttil » Fri Aug 10, 2012 5:01 pm

Lunan Bay this morning

3500 razorbill, 2700 guillemot

Montrose Bay this afternoon
650 common terns, 500 Sandwich terns, 250 Arctic terns. Plenty of imms of all three species present. Most of the Arctics were imm suggesting the adults have moved on. I recorded no succesful Arctic terns at Glaxo or in Montrose this year so these youngsters must have come from further afield. The common terns had some success in Montrose this year.

A further 500 guillemots and 50 razorbills in Montrose Bay

ALso 3,000 herring gulls and 3,000 kittiwakes in the Bay with larger numbers of "white birds" both further out to sea and over the border ioff Aberdeenshire

Sandwich terns

Postby simonbusuttil » Sat Aug 11, 2012 5:08 pm

Living in Montrose for my eighth summer, it's been fairly obvious to me that Sandwich terns have been more obvious this year than usual. This was bourne out when I was able to count 1,750 roosting at 1700 hrs today on the Basin - all at the north and eastern ends

21 Aug 2012 Elliot to Victoria park. Did WeBS count yesterday and the amount of Guillemots,Razorbills, Sandwich Terns adults and juvs, Arctic Terns adults and juvs, was quite large, had a few Common Terns, Little gulls adults and juvs. Non birding, a lot of traveling caravans have arrived back ot Arbroath football ground. So if venturing along there watch your gear. Got asked yesterday for looks through Scope and Binos but ignored them and walked on.

22 Aug - 19:30 to 20:30 (high tide - 19:30)

Montrose Lurgies
2 guillemots at the Old Montrose Pier and very close to the footpath (but still in the water). Also, spotted redshank seen roosting on dead tree on Miss Erskine's bank. Also, common sandpipers and 2 snipe. A single canada goose also present. On the Lurgies, the black swan was within the mute swan flock and reasonably close. A single osprey fishing, along with several sandwich terns.

Slightly off-topic, but a single bat was seen flying over the water (a meter or 2 from the path) from the old pier all the way along to past Miss Ershkine's bank and was taking regular drinks.

91 winter thrushes, 35 autumn Mipits and 6 summer Ospreys

Postby Clive McKay » Sat Aug 25, 2012 9:52 pm

It's that time of year when flocks of thrushes tend to get reported as Fieldfares, but I'm pretty sure that most of these are flocks of Mistle Thrushes - like the flock of 91 on the hill behind my house today. Mist-netting in the garden was productive for Mipits today - 35 throwing themselves into the net - they're starting to look quite smart now after moulting out their scabby juvenile feathers, and will soon be on the mmove. Apparently summer isn't over as three broods of two Ospreys still in or close to their nests today. High pressure between Scotland and Iceland today/tomorrow could bring White wags through next week.

Cheers

Clive

Tagged Marsh Harriers

Postby Clive McKay » Wed Aug 29, 2012 12:35 pm

Dear all

Following recent sightings of a tagged bird at the Basin, I've spoken to Steve Moyes of Tay RG and he tells me that the tagged Marsh Harriers carry tags on both wings and the colours can be different on right and left wing, so if you see a tagged bird, please try and get info from both wings.

Cheers
