Marsh Warbler

Postby Stephen Appleton » Thu Oct 18, 2012 12:07 pm

Montreathmont Forest [DD8 2TW], just observed an insect eating bird with warbler bill, beautiful rich chesnut coloured back, clear pale stripe over eye. compared to the robin behind it, much richer in colour on the back, slimmer but of similar length. A pale variably coloured chest/front. Googling pictures a marsh warbler seems closest until reading distribution! Any thoughts? the habitat here is edge of mixed conifer/deciduous woods, marshy ground, the bird flew to portakabin window - presumably taking insects from spiders webs, was disturbed by my head turning, settled briefly on a stem of rosebay willowherb and flew off.

Looking at a wider selection of warblers than I was this morning - Radde's Warbler looks most closely resembling the bird I saw - in particular the position, length and boldness of the eye stripe. I can't be certain, but that's my current guess. I'd be pleased know any other thoughts anyone may have.

October 21st 10-30am RADDES WARBLER At Lunan Bay Dunes - take track on Left from Public Car park on landward side of dunes and just past the 3 tall Sycamore Trees on right hand side beside the wire fence the bird performed at close range - much to my great relief as this was my 3rd attempt to see this Eastern rare migrant .
Thanks to Keith who first heard the bird calling and this got us on to it - Phew !

Redpoll

Postby Stephen Appleton » Sun Oct 21, 2012 9:50 pm

Redpoll near Tealing in garden close to Speckled Hen Coffee shop [DD4 0QX], 3.30pm or thereabouts this afternoon for some 15 - 20 minutes feeding on thistle seeds. Seemed to be a lone bird. I think a Mealy / Common Redpoll (Carduelis flammea), but I'm no expert. It seems some of the bird book authors are not keen on idents. too! My RSPB book of British birds doesn't list a single redpoll and the Colins bird guide 2nd ed. doesn't list lesser. This was very interesting reading, thank you to Lee Evans and his contributors: http://www.uk400clubonline.co.uk/File-S ... dpolls.pdf - I wish I'd had this on hand when the bird was still around!

Snow buntings

Postby simonbusuttil » Sat Oct 27, 2012 4:06 pm

Snow on the hills so checked the Cathertons for snow buntings. Two on the top of the southern one. Checked the sea for little auks but less succesful. Watched a short-eared owl come in low over the sea making landfall just south of Fishtown of Usan having taken a hammering from the local gulls. A movement of redpolls south too and a variety of wildfowl moving offshore.

At Glamis Castle yesterday amongst the usual birds there was a single Raven flying around the pinetum area. Is that unusual?

Nicola, Hi
The raven has been around for a few weeks but it is definitely unusual for one to settle down in the area. Watch this space?

29th OCT - Riverside Nature Park

Postby Grant Balfour » Wed Oct 31, 2012 8:53 am

Had a few hours to wait in Dundee so headed to the Riverside Nature Park.
Got 35 species & the star was the White Tailed Eagle which flew across the reserve, chased by every crow in the area. Too high up to see any wing tags though.

Riverside Nature Park. 5 Dippers all squabbling at mouth of Fowlis Burn ( There were 3 on 28th). They were feeding(as well as fighting) well out into the estuary, presumably on Gammarus shrimps. This is the first time I've seen this feeding behaviour.
One had a black colour ring above metal on right leg which is the code for 2012 Dighty chicks. Caught this one later and it turned out to be from Trottick Ponds.
Ken Slater, Chris McGuigan and myself have marked over 180 Dipper chicks this summer. Different river systems have a different single colour code. If anyone sees a marked bird could they contact Ken or Chris and we will follow the sighting up.

Other birds here included 100 Teal and 1 Spotted Redshank

Riverside Nature Park Sightings.

Postby Barry Farquharson » Wed Oct 31, 2012 8:39 pm

Can I ask anyone visiting Riverside Nature Park if they could please forward their lists (all species) to me via here (either by PM or email). I'm keeping a running total of species seen in/from the park since it opened on 18th June 2011, via a discussion thread on Birdforum.

http://www.birdforum.net/showthread.php?t=213067

We currently have 112 species on that list. I am also interested in the ups and downs of the more common species in the park, so even the Blue Tits and Chaffinches reports are welcome. It is heartening to see more birders starting to visit the park. The more eyes watching, the less birds we'll miss. The viewpoint hill has potential for vis-mig too (have seen thrushes and some smaller birds passing over westwards).

Any additional birds to add to the list are welcome too, if you've seen them since 18th June 2011, please message me with dates, so I can make the list as comprehensive as possible.

Thanks

Barry
