Popped into Riverside Nature Park after work for an hour or so. Probably one of my last weekday visits this year owing to the times of sunset. Unfortunately my visit also coincided with high tide. The sun set within a short while of my arriving, so the list was one of the shortest I've had. Just 11 species and another few heard only. Got quite close to the Kestrel perched in a tree. As the light faded, the Pink Footed Geese started to arrive back on the river in their hundreds with their calls echoing around in the still air and their skeins just visible as they approached, growing more visible as they passed over, "wiffling" to lose height towards the river.

Species seen - Black Headed Gull (in the bay), Carrion Crow (a few dotted around on posts and also in the compost area), Grey Heron (2 flying in to roost in the bay), Herring Gull (flying into roost), Kestrel (the resident bird perched in a tree near the Lochan), Little Grebe (still on the Lochan), Mallard (on the Lochan), Mute Swan (2 on the Lochan), Pink Footed Goose (possibly 2 in the bay before the rest arrived), Teal ( a few on the Lochan), Woodpigeon (a few flying over).
Birds only heard - Blackbird, Robin, Dunnock, Wren, Song Thrush.

Those willing to make comments on the proposals may do so at the event and/or in writing to the City Development Department no later than 22nd November 2012. All written comments sent are not representations to the Council. An opportunity to make representations to the Council will be available when a formal application is submitted.

1/11/2012 Elliot near Hatton Water Works a train passed hooting and brought up about 5,000 Pinkies, the noise was tremendous but quite a spectacular sight, No sightings of Fieldfare or Redwing in Arbroath, and most of the Rowan trees have been stripped by Blackbirds.

Riverside Nature Park 4/11/12

Postby Barry Farquharson » Sun Nov 04, 2012 9:09 pm

Popped down to Riverside Nature Park, Dundee this morning early and stayed till lunchtime. Lots of dog-walkers around, so bird numbers were pretty low (mostly single figures). Also ice on the Lochan/flooded field and the tide was quite low.

My list from 8.30 till 13.15 was - Blackbird, Black Headed Gull, Blue Tit, Buzzard, Carrion Crow, Chaffinch, Common Gull, Cormorant, Curlew, Dipper, Dunnock, Goldcrest, Goldfinch, Great Spotted Woodpecker, Great Tit, Grey Heron, Herring Gull, Jackdaw, Kestrel, Lesser Redpoll, Mallard, Mute Swan, Oystercatcher, Pink Footed Geese, Redshank, Robin, Siskin, Skylark, Sparrowhawk, Teal, Woodpigeon, Wren, Yellowhammer.

Incidentally, the running total park list (birds seen in/from the park since it opened on June 18th 2011) is now at a rather healthy 116 species.

Green Sandpiper

Postby Grant Balfour » Wed Nov 07, 2012 1:43 pm

Marks' AGV message about the Green Sandpiper at Guthrie reminded me that I'd forgotten to post about the one I saw at the Lurgies on 3rd Nov.

3-11-12 10:15am Montrose Basin - Lurgies
Green Sandpiper (1) in the area where the Mill Burn meets the River Southesk. Might stay here for the winter......
Also Greenshank (1), Snipe (6), Curlew (48 on the rough grassland with the cattle), Little Grebe (11, just off the old pier).

In Glenesk today very large mixed flock of finches. Seemed to be predominantly Chaffinches with Bramblings and Goldfinches. Feeding in uncultivated field which has been planted with forage/cover for game birds. Also small parties of Fieldfare at various locations and Redwing in single figures.

Drove past the cow field near Guthrie Castle this morning and saw one of the green sandpipers in the 'puddle'. Then on the way home mid afternoon, I didn't see anything in the 'puddle', but did see a buzzard on the ground about 5-10m away eating something.

At Kinnordy, saw 1 brambling in the trees nr the feeders. Also saw coal, great and blue tits, chaffinches and heard a GS Woodpecker. On the water were 100+ greylag geese, 2 whooper swans, a few goosanders, coots, plenty of teal, wigeon, mute swans and mallards. 2 buzzards seen, and a single bullfinch. 1 red squirrel too!

Kinnordy this morning. Arrived at Gullery hide to find Roddy with scope set up on the Bittern. Birding with all the hard work taken care of. Watched the bird in good light for some time until it flew a short distance and dropped out of view deeper into the reed bed. Moved to Swamp hide and had stunning views of three Bearded Tits- one male and two females.

Date & Time: Wednesday 21st November 2012 - 3:45pm
Species: Waxwing
Details: There were 5x Waxwings at 3:45pm in Auchmithie.
From the car just as I entered the village, I saw them feeding on berries in a private garden right next to the kids playpark.
They then flew in the pine tree next to the play park and remained there as sun went down perhaps to roost.
