Just a message for AGV text recipients.
Seemed their was an O2 blackspot in phone reception on Sunday 23rd.
Probably due to weather where I live. So apologies for smew, bittern & waxwing news not being put out.
These messages not received until very late evening.
Reception & normal service resumed.

Bearded Tits reported from Gullery hide at noon today, seen by several birders and a photo taken. Drake smew also seen earlier in the day, tends to favour the east end of the loch with some Goldeneyes.
Paths to the Swamp hide and to the 1st bridge towards kirriemuir are still underwater, Gullery hide is fine to get to and East hide ok if you have wellies on.

Riverside Nature Park 29/12/12

Postby Barry Farquharson » Sat Dec 29, 2012 10:22 pm

My last visit to Riverside Nature Park of 2012. Popped down between 1200 and 1430 to see if it had dried out much. Still a LOT of surface water around especially at the park and ride site - so much for it not flooding. Birdwise, it looks like most of the smaller birds have headed to the gardens while the ground is so wet, with very low numbers around. The Lochan was busy with Black Headed Gulls, Teal, Mallard, 2 Mute Swans and even 23 Redshanks.

Full list was 32 species. - Blackbird, Black Headed Gull, Blue Tit, Buzzard, Carrion Crow, Chaffinch, Common Gull, Cormorant, Curlew (2 on hill), Dipper (1 ringed bird briefly seen by burn mouth), Dunnock, Goldcrest, Goldfinch (10 or so), Grey Heron (1 in flooded field area), Herring Gull, Jackdaw, Kestrel, Knot (1 with Redshank flock in bay at high tide), Long Tailed Tit, Mallard, Meadow Pipit, Mistle Thrush (1 feeding on hill), Mute Swan (2 on lochan), Pied Wagtail (1 on flooded field), Redshank (100+ in bay, 23 on lochan later), Redwing (1 in trees by the dump), Robin, Feral Pigeon, Shelduck (2in bay), Starling (a few small groups overflew), Teal (100+), Woodpigeon. Wren and Bullfinch heard but not seen.

In addition to the Red Throated Diver at City Quay on Christmas Day, a Cormorant was perched atop a streetlight pole by the dry dock area. Looking at the photos I took it appears to have been a bird of the "sinensis" race.
