February 23rd 2013 - Red-throated Divers

Postby Alex Shepherd » Sun Feb 24, 2013 11:15 am

Date & Time: Saturday 23rd February 2013 - 3.00 pm

Species: Red Throated Diver

Details: Inverbervie beach in front of car park 2 Red-throated Diver along with a Merganser and some Eider fishing within 50-100 metres of each other on a small swell and after high water. Original post suggested one diver was a Black-throated but it seems it was likely a juvenile, 1st winter Red-thoated.

Fowlesheugh: The bridge over the burn at the start of the path was damaged by flooding and has been dismantled and is to be replaced. The path is currently closed although access is to my mind still safe and I found many Fulmar at the start of the route along with Herring Gulls, Rock Doves and perhaps c24 Jackdaws. The RSPB website will have updates on progress for re-opening of the path.

1st May 2013 - St Cyrus NNR (bird hide side) 19:30 to 20:30

2 short eared owls, a kestrel and a male sparrowhawk.

The kestrel caught something whilst being watched by one of the owls, which was sitting on a fencepost. The kestrel then landed on a fence post about 10m away from the owl and ate its meal.
