Date & Time: Friday 22nd February 2013 - 4.15 pm

25th Feb

Glen Prosen (10 - 11am) - red grouse, black grouse, lapwings, mistle thrush, kestrel.

Glen Clova (12 - 2pm) - loads of buzzards, red legged partridges, a field full of starlings, lapwing and oystercatchers (and 2 curlew). Chaffinches and coal tits at Glen Doll ranger station, including a chaffinch sat on my car wing mirror. Heading back towards the Clova Hotel, rounded a corner and there were 3 black grouse in the top of a tree! Rottal Lodge had more red legged partridges and plenty of mistle trushes and fieldfares in the fields.

Kinnordy (3 - 3:30pm) - never got the iceland gull message due to being in the glens, so never knew to search for it. But did see mute and whooper swans, male smew, tufted ducks, goldeneye, goosander, teal, wigeon, mallards, brambling, coal / great / blue tits, greylag geese, coot.

Old Montrose pier (4:30pm) - 31 mute swans within a few metres and 6 little grebes.

Postby Grant Balfour » Wed Feb 27, 2013 8:38 am

25th Feb.
A trip up 'one of the Angus Glens' came up with three Red Kite in one group, a pair of Ravens and the odd Buzzard.

26th Feb.
Kinnordy 8:40 - Iceland Gull still present from the East Hide. Roosting with the other gulls. Flew off about 9:30am
Lintrathen 13:45 - Male Smew seen from the new hide.
I sent out the 26th Feb sightings to AGV but I don't think they went through.
(sorry Grant your text was never sent/received by me - Mark Caunt)

Sorry this sighting wasn't in Angus, but was surprised to see hooded crows in the roundabout outside Edinburgh airport this afternoon - never seen them so far south. Has anyone else?

Wednesday 27th February - Montrose Basin

Apologies for the late report, as I was awaiting confirmation on my Black Necked Grebes (a lifer for me). Went walking at Montrose Basin in the sunshine from the station to Bridge of Dun, via the Lurgies and back again.
I tried putting out a message via the grapevine yesterday morning about the White Tailed Eagle and the Waxwings but couldn't get a phone signal till I was on the train home, 6 hrs later (by which time both birds had gone) despite trying at regular intervals.

Full list was - Blackbird, Black Headed Gull, Black Necked Grebe (2), Blue Tit, Buzzard, Carrion Crow, Chaffinch, Coal Tit, Collared Dove, Common Gull, Cormorant, Curlew, Dipper (4), Dunlin, Dunnock, Eider, Goldeneye, Goldfinch, Great Black Backed Gull, Great Tit, Greenfinch, Grey Heron, Grey Wagtail (1), Greylag Goose, Herring Gull, House Sparrow, Jackdaw, Knot, Little Grebe, Long Tailed Duck, Mallard, Mute Swan, Oystercatcher, Pheasant, Pink Footed Goose, Red Breasted Merganser, Redshank, Robin, Feral Pigeon, Scaup, Shelduck, Skylark, Song Thrush, Starling, Tree Sparrow, Waxwing (7), White Tailed Eagle (1 - red tags), Wigeon, Wren, Yellowhammer.

The WTE put up everything in the bay then settled on the mud until the tide came in when it decided to try and catch an injured Greylag on the water before being chased off by a gull and a crow. The Waxwings were in a tree in the corner of the first house at Rossie Mills as I headed west. A nice wee surprise. The 4 Dippers were at Bridge of Dun. Saw three close together (1 pair flying around together - 1 singing as it went), and another appeared from under the water as I was trying to re-find the first three.
