City Quay, Dundee - Sunday 24th March (PM).

3 Slavonian Grebes (2 moulting into summer plumage, 1 in winter plumage) showing really well mostly near the Unicorn. Also the Red Throated Diver is still around, and appears to have a rather damaged wingtip which is probably the reason for its enforced long stay. Looks otherwise healthy enough - unlike the Red Breasted Merganser which expired behind the Unicorn within a short period of time (didn't look too healthy when I saw it originally, but was dead when I passed by again) and the dead Puffin floating near the Clock Tower flats. In addition a few Cormorants, about 10 Red Breasted Mergansers and a Linnet also around. Herring and Lesser Black Backed Gulls by the dry dock.

Auk Wreck, Arbroath and Water Rail, Balgavies

Postby Alex Shepherd » Wed Mar 27, 2013 7:49 pm

Wednesday March 27th 2013 - 2.00pm

Water Rail
Details: 2 Water Rails in front of Hide at Balgavies, often heard and only my second sighting. Also 2 Moorhens which can easily confuse if only glimpsed. Photo in Photo Section and others with bigger lenses may also post photos.

Dead Auks in Arbroath area: Victoria Park, 6 Puffins and 1 Guillemot. One group of 3 Puffins had been brought together into a group maybe confirming what Mickey heard that someone was collecting the dead. Previously on Tuesday 9 Puffins, 3 Guillemots and 2 Razorbills between the sewage works and Gayfield Park. All of the birds I've seen are where there is beach above the high water mark, other areas like most of Victoria Park where there is a sea wall no birds, probably taken out as the tide goes.

For photographers, a female Peregrine is being flown at Keptie Pond during the gull nesting season to "encourage" gulls not to nest, times unknown but was 1630 on Tuesday.

On the subject of wrecked Puffins there was a dead one floating in City Quay on Sunday afternoon near the clock tower flats, and a Red Breasted Merganser expired while I was in the area (saw it looking very weak behind Unicorn, struggling to lift its head and drifting slightly among the flotsam that collects here - when I came back to the same area later to photograph the Slavs, it had died). The birds are fairly taking a battering out there, it seems.

Sunday 31st March, Riverside Nature Park, Dundee

A visit to Riverside Nature Park yesterday produced a list of 40 species including 2 flyover White Tailed Eagles (assumed from photos to be 2009 birds - turquoise I and Z - one has only 1 tag, the other has the aerial hanging from the front - both features seen on photos, albeit distantly). Managed photos of the Jack Snipe too.
