Monday 1st April 2013 - Osprey and Jack Snipe

Postby Alex Shepherd » Mon Apr 01, 2013 7:22 pm

Date & Time: 1/4/2013 2-00pm - 3.30pm

Species: Osprey and Jack Snipe

Details: Osprey as reported by Hugh Bell at 12.30pm on usual tree east of Old Harbour at Montrose Basin, bird had what looked like a sea trout and was still on the tree when the tide came in at 3.30pm.

Jack Snipe at back of the bank marsh at the Lurgies opposite the Slunks. Also, 14 Teal, 8 Goldeneye, 1 Pintail, 2 Little Grebe, 22 Mute Swans, 12 Shelduck, 5 Redshank, 1 Robin, 1 Chaffinch and 2 male Red-breasted Meregansers. Great Spotted Woodpecker heard in trees near car park.

Trip on Rossie Moor abandoned, the moor is being cleared of scrub and looks to be readied for tree planting with new fencing, not deer fencing as I previously misreported. This was a decent spot for finding Snipe, Jack Snipe and sometimes Woodcock, I hope they intend keeping the footpaths open. "Note, I have emailed SNH and Angus Council Planning Department asking what's being done and if access will be maintained, I also downloaded a species list which shows 145 species over the years have been seen on the moor".

Old quarry at Boysack 35 Twite on power cables, no signs of target species seen.

Hi Alex, if you have any concerns re the activity on Rossie Moor have a look at

http://gateway.snh.gov.uk/sitelink/docu ... Type_ID=33

If the area you are concerned about is covered by the SSSI, then have a read at

http://gateway.snh.gov.uk/sitelink/docu ... Type_ID=28

Might then be worth chasing up the local authority first to see if any planning application has been approved, then SNH if not. My guess would be that they do have approval, but might be worth chasing up

Cheers, SRG

Wednesday 3rd April 2013 - Great Crested Grebe

Postby Alex Shepherd » Wed Apr 03, 2013 6:30 pm

Date & Time: 3/4/2013 - 1.00pm - 2.30pm

Species: Great Crested Grebe

Details: 14 Great Crested Grebe on Forfar Loch between the leisure centre and the yacht club, along with 16 Goosander, 1 little Grebe, 8 Song Thrush, 2 Bullfinch, 25 Tufted Duck, 8 Goldeneye, 4 Gadwall, 12 Lesser Black-backed Gulls, 1 Redshank and 4 Pochard. Male grebes being protective of their females and chasing other males around, I assume many will move on once their breeding habitat becomes ice free. More birds further up the loch but no details. A search of today's photos appears to reveal a Tufted Duck/Pochard hybrid which I'll ask about before posting.

06/04/2013 Arbroath Elliot. Nothing to shout about Meadow Pipits up singing and parachuting down, Meadow Pipits in reed beds singing, Crows on golf course nest building. Beach, few dead Puffins and one chewed up Guillemot. Ringed Plover in among pebbles near one of last years nesting areas. Harbour only Red Shanks on wall. Had first Bee trying to get in one of my house windows.

Arbroath Cliffs and Forfar Loch ID confirmed as Scaup

Postby Alex Shepherd » Sat Apr 06, 2013 7:34 pm

Saturday 6th April 2013 - 2.00pm to 4.00pm

Details: Kittiwakes and Herring Gull nesting, no eggs seen yet. Skylarks, Meadow Pipits, Yellowhammers, Fulmar, Cormorants, 2 Shags, Kestrel, Reed Bunting and 45 Twite between Whiting Ness and Carlingheugh Bay. Eider and Redshanks at Victoria Park.

Duck from Forfar Loch on Wednesday 3rd appeared to be paired with a Pochard so I thought it might be a hybrid, it was in fact a very late Scaup for the Loch. I have looked up BirdTrack and there are no reports for March or April from 2009 to now and the latest in any year was 25/2/2008, I also thought they stayed on the coast. Learned something new again!

Seawatching at Usan for an hour mid afternoon. Kittiwakes heading north (all adults) at a rate of 600/hr. Absolutely nothing else moving. A notable absence of auks on the sea with the exception of razorbills.

Siskins in Monifieth garden

Postby Barbara Grimmond » Sun Apr 07, 2013 4:16 pm

My 2 sunflower heart feeders have been really busy all day.
Non stop siskins - up to 7 at a time, greenfinches- have had hardly any all winter, and goldfinches.
Usual visits from pair of great spotted woodpeckers, pair of bullfinches.
Yellowhammers and long tailed tits.
Two brown birds on sunflower feeder - possibly linnets, proper birdwatchers have identified them from photos in the past.

Migration article on BirdGuides

Postby Clive McKay » Tue Apr 09, 2013 7:38 am

Dear all

BirdGuides has just published an article I wrote on migration a month ago which includes a section on Red Kite moving through Angus after the snow and the Kinnordy Bittern that might be of interest. This is the link http://www.birdguides.com/webzine/article.asp?a=3672

Free to view until Thursday. Please pass on the link to anyone you think might be interested.

Cheers

Clive

Arbroath Keptie Pond. 09/04/2013. Never a dull moment. There are now 4 Swans at the pond. 2 interlopers turned up over night and this has brought the female from her nest. The male is keeping them well at bay. Also there are now 6 Gooseanders again 4 males and 2 Females. 2 Coots nest now in operation. Arbroath cliffs only produced lots of Kittiwake and nothing else of interest.
