1 May 2013 - Dippers and Kingfishers

Postby Grant Balfour » Thu May 02, 2013 7:34 am

All three Dipper nests that were lost in the high river levels during April have been rebuilt.

Pair of Kingfishers on the Kinnaird Middle Beat yesterday evening. They were at some flood pools left after last month and which will probably dry up in the next few weeks.

two little ringed plovers back on a breeding site in Angus this morning.

Unfortunately the roof which provided a good base for a productive black-headed gull (and common/Arctic) colony on Forties Ind Estate in Montrose for the past two years has been removed. WHilst the terns are n't in yet the only colony of black-headed gulls I'm aware of is at Murton where current high water levels may limit the area available for them. If anyone knows of any other (eg in a flooded field somewhere), please let me know

After dark at Kinnordy

Postby simonbusuttil » Tue May 07, 2013 9:58 am

Stayed until 11 pm last night listening for spotetd crakes as the first was heard calling last year on 5th May and last night was ideal - warm and that unusual feeling up here - still. No spotted crakes but 12 water rails calling. Prev surveys with tapes have indicated up to 17 territories here so its quite expected.

If anyone feels like it and hears any crakes here - please put the news out or contact me directly as I am co-ordinating the results for RSPB. The site was, last year, the most important site in the UK for spotted crakes. It would be good to get an idea as to whether that was a one-off.

Thanks

Simon

marsh harrier (female) on lurgies and short-eared owl in Montrose dunes yesterday evening. Little at sea though the first biggish feeding flocks that I've seen were off Fishtown of Usan with hundreds of (mainly imm) gulls and kittiwakes (inc some imms) feeding. No common or Arctic terns at all.
