Tree Pipit singing from a tall dead tree in a woodland clearing near Farnell.

Three Chifchaffs in one tree at Kinnaird Park. Two were singing males. The third wasn't singing and presumably a female although it didn't seem to be interested in either of the males....

Garden Warbler still in the hedges beside Fishers Cottage near Balbirnie Mill.

Glen Prosen and Kinnordy

Postby colinlamond » Wed May 15, 2013 7:22 pm

Took a drive around the Glen Prosen this morning. As I drove into the glen, near the monument to Scott, there were coal tits, great tits and a great spotted woodpecker was drumming. Drove further down the glen and heard a few redstarts in the woods. Curlew, lapwing and oystercatchers were flying around and a snipe called. Near the Spott there was a spotted flycatcher here and another couple of redstart. A few swallows flew over the Prosen Village.
I drove further up the glen and found tree and meadow pipits. Found a couple of red grouse. A cuckoo called in the valley and a few more redstarts were singing in the trees. On the river there was a female goosander, a few common sandpipers and a dipper. Lesser redpolls and siskins were common as were willow warblers. I found another greater spotted woodpecker and a few ravens were flying over the hillside. Heard a few goldcrest. A common gull was perched on a post.
Saw lots of red and roe deer.
On the way back to Kirriemuir I stopped by some farmland where there was a buzzard. A couple of brown hares were running about, lots of sand martins and some skylarks.

In the afternoon I visited Kinnordy Loch.
The loch had teal, mallard, shoveler and tufted ducks. I found willow warblers, sedge warblers and a whitethroat between the hides. There were lots of sand martins hunting over the loch, with a few swallows amongst them. A couple of shellducks were there also.
There were a few geese, mostly greylag with three pink footed geese.
A reed bunting called from outside the gullery hide.
There were a couple of bullfinches outside the swamp hide.
Two brown hares were on the fields opposite along with two roe deer.

Another trip to Glen Prosen

Postby colinlamond » Thu May 16, 2013 12:27 pm

Returned to Glen Prosen this morning, but this time drove up the western side starting at the Meams Farm.
On the farm land I found a few oystercatcher, and some brown hares.
I drove up to where the road boarders some grouse moors. There were several red grouse calling from the heather. I also found two whichats here and meadow pipits. A small group of cross bills called as they flew over, disappearing into the conifer plantation.
As yesterday, there were many mistle thrushes singing from the woods and one or two song thrush. The willow warblers were numerous, but I heard only one chiffchaff.
Amongst the conifers I found goldcrest, siskins. In the birch woodland I found a redstart and tree pipit.
There were a couple of grey wagtails on the stream.
I heard at least four cuckoos calling at several points in the glen.
I spotted a pair of ravens flying over the moor. There were lots of jackdaws.
Buzzards were plentiful and I spotted one kestrel.
On the moorland, I saw three mountain hares from the road, and there were several large herds of red deer.
At the Spott, I found a spotted flycatcher in the same place as yesterday.

Kirriemuir

Postby colinlamond » Thu May 16, 2013 8:43 pm

This morning I walked over an area of rough ground near to Kinnordy Loch.
When we arrived, several willow warblers were singing along with a yellow hammer. As we walked from the car, siskins and redpolls were flying about. There were also several whitethroats.
A couple of buzzards flew over.
We found several meadow pipits.
We flushed a couple of partridge.
A song thrush was singing nearby, and I found one long tailed tit, a few blue and great tits.
We saw curlew, lapwing and oystercatcher.
Skylarks were signing from the wing.
I walked round Kirriemuir in the afternoon and spotted one swift. There were two dippers on the Gairie Burn in the den.
We saw lots of swifts over Kinnordy Loch in the evening. I think I heard a water rail from the hide. Whitethroats, sedge warbler and a reed bunting were calling.

Two Angus Glens in one day

Postby colinlamond » Fri May 17, 2013 4:44 pm

Went up another of the Angus glens early this morning.
There were several brown hares on the fields on the way up.
I stopped at a bridge where a burn comes down a valley into the main glen. From the car I heard redstart, mistle thrush and willow warbler. Walked up the valley a short way and found three black grouse, a whinchat, several curlews and some lapwings. A large heard of red deer where in the distance.

I drove on further up the glen to an area of moorland. At the car a cuckoo was calling.

Set off up the glen on foot. Found a tree creeper. Seven black grouse were in a field, but a workman working on some drainage scared them off. Several snipe called from near the river, and one was displaying above me, making that strange call with its tail feathers.
There were curlews, lapwings, oystercatchers and several spotted sandpipers on the river.

I found a few wheatears and further up the glen. I stopped at a primitive bridge for some photographs and a dipper flew up and down the river. Crossed over the bridge and climbed up the mountain side a short way for some more photographs. I found another three black grouse up here, and a few more red grouse. There was one roe deer. I also found one mountain hare here.

On the walk back down I found a few more wheatears, a tree pipit called from some trees and there was a second cuckoo.
On the drive down the glen I spotted a couple of red partridge from the car.

Visited a second glen with my father in the afternoon.

On the drive up, a woodcock crossed in front of the car. We also saw some grey partridge.
At the spot where we parked the car, there was a dipper, chaffinch, tree pipit and a couple of bullfinches.
In the spruce trees we found a few coal tits, and willow warblers were calling.

We walked up the glen into the teeth of a strong wind. We found a grey wagtail by the river and meadow pipits were plentiful.
The strong wind meant there were not many birds around, but as we got further up the glen we reached more sheltered ground. I heard some mistle thrush on the other side of the glen. I think a ring ouzel was also singing further off. We walked as far as my father was able and sat down for a picnic. Some twite were flying around, and I heard the alarm call of a ring ouzel, but couldn’t locate it.
On the way back to the car I spotted a wheatear. A golden eagle hunted the side of the glen and a merlin whizzed overhead. We found several common sandpipers on the river. There was one buzzard, the only one of the day.

Saturday 18th May

Postby colinlamond » Sun May 19, 2013 5:39 am

I drove out to the western end of Kinnordy Loch Saturday morning. Whitethroats and sedge warblers were singing. There were redshanks, curlew and snipe. A few shelduck in a nearby field were on some farmland and some brown hares. I also saw some linnets.
I continued on up to the backwater dam, where the wind was very strong. A large grouse flew in front of the car; I am not sure which one. I parked up, and walked the road where it was sheltered from the wind. I flushed a grouse – this one was a red grouse. A whinchat was singing from the side of the road, and few siskins were flying around. I saw some mountain hares and one cuckoo was calling in the distance. There were lapwing, curlew, oystercatcher and common sandpiper.

In the afternoon, I took my nephew for a walk around Lintrathen loch. We found whitethroats and willow warblers; there was one chiffchaff and one blackcap. I heard a coal tit. Around the village of Linthrathen we saw goldfinches, chaffinches and three or four tree sparrows. There was little on the loch itself, although we did find a group of goosander of seven males and one female. I picked out a couple of great creasted grebes, and found a flock of tufted duck sheltering from the wind. A common sandpiper called from the loch side.

Postby srgreen » Sun May 19, 2013 8:45 pm

Further to Mark's post, just to clarify, the Rosefinch was actually in Auchmithie, singing by the churchyard, when it was found, and also spent some time in the garden to the front of the But n Ben. Later, it (or another, although it was most prob the same bird) was in company with the Shrike at Windyhills. The Rosefinch then appeared to fly over the fields towards Auchmithie, so may be worth checking there again. The Shrike was fairly elusive. Cheers, SRG
