Photo Section

Postby Mark Caunt » Sat Jun 01, 2013 7:34 am

Apologies but the photo section of this forum seems to have lost and corrupted photos that I have had to delete. This was caused when we had that adware/virus attack some months ago.
This has just affected uploaded photos, rather than links to photos on other hosts. Many apologies if your photo has been deleted. Please feel free to upload.
I have also put a post on the "photo example" showing how to post photos hosted on other website like flickr, etc.
Thanks.

There's been a female Common Rosefinch singing in our garden practically all morning. I managed to spy it through the binoculars and thought it was just a streaky juvenile Greenfinch but the song was nothing I've ever heard before. Decided to do some research only to find out it was a Common Rosefinch! Can't believe it!

Postby srgreen » Wed Jun 05, 2013 12:36 pm

Hi all, is more likely to be a 1st summer male than a female if it is actually singing (as opposed to calling), 1st summer males are often dull, downy, lacking in any real red, like a female.

Thanks for the identification srgreen. Unfortunately my Dad keeps racing pigeons in his loft at the bottom of the garden (where the Rosefinch is hanging out) and he may not want them getting disturbed. I've posted a photo (took me a while to figure it out) on the photo section.

Just like to tell you all there's been no sign of the Rosefinch today so he must have moved on. Excellent garden tick though ;)

6th JUNE 2013 Mandarin near Edzell

Postby joncook » Thu Jun 06, 2013 6:59 pm

Mandarin Drake on field pool by road from Edzell to Glen Lethnot at NO544685 at 2-30pm. Map here:
http://www.streetmap.co.uk/map.srf?x=35 ... 68510&lm=0
Same pool the Black-tailed Godwits were at on the recent Glen Lethnot outing.
Also 2 Teal and 1 Wigeon drakes plus a herd of over friendly cows that insisted on standing right infront of me when I tried for a photograph!
Take care when parking as road is narrow, best to use one of the entrances just west of the pool.

The Mandarin was still there at 6:30pm. Also Oystercatcher with two juveniles.

The cows had relocated to the back of the field.........

The Lurgies, Canada Geese and Whooper Swan

Postby Alex Shepherd » Mon Jun 10, 2013 10:06 am

Date & Time: Sunday 9th June 2013 - 5.30pm.

Species: Whooper Swan, Canada Geese, Goosander and Red-breasted Merganser.

Details: Still a single Whooper amongst the 102 Mute Swans I counted as the tide turned at the Lurgies, 2 pairs of Goosander and 1 pair of RB Merganser.
I've seen Canada Geese on a couple of my last visits and 11 were in the Slunks and wary even though I was on the south bank of the river.
3 Eider crèches each with a Great Black-backed Gull in attendance, usual Shelducks, Oystercatchers, Mallards and Jackdaws everywhere.

I'm sure it won't be a problem but, there is a large Aberdeen-Angus Bull with the cattle in the field which includes the path.

I was up on a tour of this estate at the start of the month with head gamekeeper and I can honestly say I have never met a More passionate wildlife/raptor person. The estate works close with the rspb raptortracks programme so they are up in the area quite a lot it just seems hard to believe, hopefully the police get to the bottom of it.

I would have to favour the comment by Chris estates I suggest are more interested in money they can make than bird conservation
And very little if any thing will be handed out to estate was the pictures fakes I don't think so

The summer plumaged Spotted Redshank was still at the Lurgies/Slunks yesterday evening (6pm-8pm).
Low tide and it was in with other Common Redshanks on the mud area where the Mill Burn exits the Slunks and joins the River Southesk.
