Managed an hour sea-watching at Fishtown of Usan after tea-time tonight. huge numbers of seabirds feeding offshore. best bird was a juvenille Pomarine Skua heading south and 3 Arctic Skuas doing what skuas do best, harrassing other birds for their catch.
A quick stop at the Lurgies produced a Little Egret, 6 Ruff, 12 Greenshank and a Green Sandpiper.

05/09/2013 Condor: Ref bobs House Martins, had 22 on Condor along with lots of Swallows with juvs, until they got disturbed by a Falcon which came out of the blue then the sky emptied. Did not get good look at the Falcon was, moving too fast. Willow Warbler with Juv in the Memorial garden, Blackcap singing in trees at back of camp.

Mediterranean Gull

Postby Alex Shepherd » Thu Sep 05, 2013 8:57 pm

Thursday 5th September 2013 - Mediterranean Gull

Details: The Mediterranean Gull is still at the rear of the Nite Club (Ballys, Jumpin Joeys) in Arbroath, I've seen it often and eventually got the photo to prove to a sceptical partner!
It's still associating with the Black-headed Gulls but was scared off again, this time by the ice cream kiosk guy throwing away today's rolls behind the paddling pool at 4.30 pm. Photo section has the photo.

Whimbrel - 1
R-T Diver - 11

more seawatching at Usan

Postby simonbusuttil » Sat Sep 07, 2013 8:55 pm

I managed a couple of sessions at Usan today. Between 0730 and 0930 the following
red throated diver 12 (all south in contrast to almost all otehr movements)
Atrctic skua 14 N
Juv Pom 1 north (this bird is a different (earlier) one to those Gus reported)
Bonxie 5 nth
Sooty shearwater 2 nth (also different to those Gus reports - again earlier)
Manxie 245 nth
Fulmar 1500 nth
Kittiwake 4100 nth
Gannet 1000 nth

Odds and sods like whimbrel, pintail wigeon etc moving too

Tonight in one hr
a further 500 fulmars went nth - so the rate of passage had substantially slackened off. There were also fewer gannets and kittiwakes on the move, but more terns
a further 130 manxies
another sooty shearwater
one Balearic shearwater
one Bonxie and one Arctic skua nth plus 2 of the latter harrying kittiwakes offshore

I know that H Bell had a Balearic shearwater north about 15 mins before my sighting and that there was another seen earlier (per Gus) so at least 3 were recorded past Usan today

09 Sept 2013 Elliot. Few House Martins and a good count of Swallows all passing through. Juv Reed Buntings in reed beds. Little Tern passed through moving south towards East Haven, Sandwich Terns still quite plentiful. Non birding travellers have moved in East and North side of Arbroath Football club. Police will probably try to move them on but that could take sometime.

Easthaven Hobby and Med Gull

Postby Alex Shepherd » Mon Sep 09, 2013 7:20 pm

Date & Time: Monday 9th September 2013 - 3.30 pm

Species: Hobby and Mediterranean Gull

Details: Just to confirm the AGV text, a Hobby flew from the garden area of one of the first houses at Easthaven where the Fordson tractors are towards the northernmost house when looking to the west. There had been a very heavy shower at the time so it may have been sheltering, also the reason I couldn't try for a photo. The Mediterranean Gull was foraging among the seaweed about 600 metres north and photographed from the wooden walkway. The only other birds of note was a female Wheatear and 10 Linnets.

AGV as well as message posted above by Barry
14th September 2013
Curlew sandpiper still at north-west end of lintrathen loch. gus.

Due to over 115 members now being on the AGV, my monthly 'unlimited' texts ran out! (seems me and my mobile provider have different ideas of what unlimited mean!) causing me not to put out all texts received to save texts this week. Just what i could. Anyway negotiated new contract now and have full unlimited texts (proper unlimited in every sense of the word!) and normal service resumed.
Please keep your texts coming in and they will be distributed as normal.
