Montreathmont - 1-3pm Monday

Very quiet to start with until I got past the entrance to the hide path. Had a wren and then some bullfinches at the far end. On the way back towards the hide path, had a green woodpecker fly across the main path and then saw a raptor soaring high above the trees where the feeders are. Wasn't till I got home that I could decipher from my photos that it was a goshawk.

At the entrance to the hide path heard several birds sounding quite grasshopper-like, but it wasn't until I was heading back along the main path that they revealed themselves to be 5-6 goldcrests.

At the hide there were blue, coal and great tits, great spotted woodpeckers, a robin, blackbird, chaffinches, a jay and a sparrowhawk flew through.

12 Nov 2013 Arbroath, doing Webs count but nothing out of the ordinary until I got to the Bowling Alley and found this small wader type bird on the waves near the slipway by paddling pool. Immediate reaction was Grey Phalarope so made a few phone calls and Alex Shepherd and Jon Cook came along and between us ID'ed it as the Grey Phalarope. Photos taken so awaiting them and got Mark to put it on Grape Vine. But as usual a dog walker let his dog go and chase all waders off including our rarity which went towards Elliot water. It may turn up at Easthaven.

Friday 15th November 2013 - Grey Phalarope

Postby Mark Caunt » Fri Nov 15, 2013 5:25 pm

Date & Time: Friday 15th November 2013 - 13:30 till 14:15 at least
Species: Grey Phalarope, Peregrine, Grey Plover, Sanderling
Details: After a long wait Grey Phalarope dropped in at Carnoustie Bay.
Barry Farquahrson had the bird earlier in the morning but from 10:30 till 13:30 was absent despite many treks up and down the bay. When it did show, it was seen firstly in the bay opposite the Children Play Park and then directly opposite the car park just east of the small burn outflow.

Also perhaps of note: Brent Geese just off shore, plenty of Sanderling including 35+ near the burn out flow, Grey plovers scattered about also and a Peregrine dropped in and dispersed the wader flocks, but nothing caught.

Saturday 23rd November 2013 - Tawny Owl

Postby Alex Shepherd » Sun Nov 24, 2013 12:11 pm

Date & Time: Saturday 23rd November 2013 - 10.00 pm

Species: Tawny Owl

Details: Tawny Owl calling and seen in trees at Balmachie Road end of parklands at Carnoustie House Grounds, probably used to disturbance as there were kids in the park and a dog walker.
My step-daughter confirms this Owl is heard often from her house at the other side of Newton Road and may use the trees in Woodlands School.

Male Peregrine feeding on what looked to be an imm. Common Gull in the car park at the Coop in Brechin today at 14.15 approx. Can't say if it had killed the Gull but it was tucking in and paying little attention to the cars and shoppers going by. I watched it from the car for around 5 mins, went into the shop and when I came out it had gone and a Coop employee was disposing of the remains of the prey into a Coop plastic bag.
