Monday 4th January 2016 - Little Auk

Postby Mark Caunt » Mon Jan 04, 2016 3:12 pm

Date & Time: Monday 4th January 2016 - 1:05pm
Species: Little Auk
Details: Imagine my surprise when I went into my Auchmithie Garden today and found a Little Auk seeking shelter. It is uninjured, can flap its wings and walk, but very tired after probably the worst stormy night I've experienced whilst living in Auchmithie for 18 years! In a cardboard box drying out in the warm awaiting SSPCA pick up as per their instructions.

Little Auk

Postby Alan Mowat » Mon Jan 04, 2016 4:44 pm

Little Auk in my garden today at about 2.00pm.
Just outside Edzell so poor wee bird blown well off course.
Looks fine, just tired.
Exactly the same, in a box waiting for SSPCA to pick up.
I wonder how many there have been today!!!

Sspca have just picked up the auk. That was the 8th one today.

More Little Auks - Arbroath

Postby Alex Shepherd » Mon Jan 04, 2016 8:42 pm

209 Little Auks past at Whiting Ness today between 1200 and 1240 along with a Great Skua, a juvenile Gannet and a Red-breasted Merganser. Purple Sandpipers were in the thick of the spray on the rocks and Turnstones closer in. The Little Auks were flying along the waters edge with a few very near the road and later at Arbroath Harbour one flew from the water over the boat yard. Photos and video on my blog and YouTube.

31 Fulmars counted on prospective nest sites at Auchmithie today during a BTO NEWS Survey, also a two Kittiwakes fishing in the harbour area and 17 dead Octopuses and 4 Ling on the beach.

No sign of Short-eared owls at Elliot but a walker said one was seen recently. Note, the level crossing is currently closed over the weekend for works

ADBC/SOC WADER WATCH OUTING.

From Monifieth to Montrose Basin with stops at various locations along the way.

A total of 60 species recorded including 11 Wader species.

Highlights were an Avocet flying over our heads at Mains of Usan (and then being re-located near Lunan Bay), various Little Auks at Arbroath and at Usan, Grey Plovers at Monifieth and a very obliging Kingfisher at Montrose Basin Centre.

A big thank you to everyone who attended, it is appreciated.

Glaucous Gull, Westhaven

Postby Alex Shepherd » Fri Jan 15, 2016 10:07 pm

The reported Glaucous Gull from yesterday made a guest appearance in my BTO NEWS Survey today at Westhaven and looks likely to hang around but will also continue to be disturbed by walkers etc. Today the gull did return each time to feed on a seal carcass where if careful you can get good views without having to go close.

Postby Alex Shepherd » Sun Jan 17, 2016 10:12 pm

The Slavonian Grebe was still present at 1550 in front of the public platform at Lunan Bay today. The Pomarine Skua may have been one I saw just north of Whiting Ness, Arbroath earlier this week so it may be hanging around.

White-fronted Goose and Bittern

Postby Alex Shepherd » Tue Jan 19, 2016 7:41 pm

A White-fronted Goose previously reported on Birdguides was still in a grass field just north of Whigstreet today at NO 484 445. I had suggested the best view was from behind bales but a later message asks we stay out of the field in front of the one with the goose which was with a large number of Pink-footed Geese.

The Bittern at the Bank of Scotland Hide at the Basin was showing well in the open near dusk today.
