Thayers Gull, Donmouth

Postby Alex Shepherd » Thu Jan 21, 2016 6:33 pm

A hard to find bird the Thayers Gull (1st winter) at Donmouth, it was around at 1030 and flew south along the beach, and lost to view at the 9th groyne but returned to a sandbar at the mouth of the Don at around 1500 which seems to be a bit of a pattern according to local birders. It was completely absent or not seen during hide tide.

If you do go north it might be worth a cup of coffee at Burger King in Altens where Olive spotted "a strange bird" near a bin in the car park at 1550, it was a Hooded Crow! It flew to the roof of BK then was chased by a gull.

American Wigeon, Gaddon Loch, Fife

Postby joncook » Fri Jan 22, 2016 5:46 pm

Popped over to Fife in this afternoons sunny interval for the American Wigeon at Gaddon Loch and struck lucky. Got it reasonably close to after about 15 mins, though apparently it had spent much of the day skulking out of sight behind an island.
Pics in photographs section as cant seem to post here.

Nuthatches again at Killicrankie Sunday 14th. No sign of ring necked duck on Cuilic probably because it was frozen. There was a Mandarin drake on Faskally beside the boating station. A raft of tufted further out prob had the ring necked but couldn't confirm due to sun in eyes and no scope. Ian Laird and Kenny Grant

Visited Morton Lochs briefly yesterday afternoon but there wasn't much out on the loch (a lot of ice!) we did see the resident pair of Mute Swans with their 4 grown up cygnets from last year, a couple of Little Grebes, Mallard, Gadwall, Wigeon, Teal and Tufted Duck. Was hoping to see the Kingfisher but no luck.

Ring-necked Drake confined in a small area of open water near the sluice at the Cuilc on Golf Course Road. NN 93732 58738.

Also a single Canada Goose on Faskally.

Friday 26th February

Scone Palace

Flock of 6-8 Hawfinches high in the trees halfway down the avenue, and then also to the left at the far end of the avenue. Also, in this far corner to the left of the end of the avenue (where the bio-degradable recycling occurs - lots of logs etc) were 2 goldcrest, a great spotted woodpecker, blackbirds, 2 song thrush, wren, robins, great and blue tits, a treecreeper and a nuthatch.

Standing at the archway at the start of the avenue, we twice had a woodcock fly over us. Also seen was a small flock of long tailed tits.

Currently showing well at St Cyrus and all from the path, Ravens, one sitting on a nest, a Kestrel hunting, Peregrines mating, Buzzards soaring and perhaps the most unusual a Red Kite which was chased away by the male Raven, Herring Gulls and Jackdaws. A video of the Peregrines is on the club Facebook page here, https://www.facebook.com/angusbirdwatching

Monday 01. August 2016
Hill north of Craigendarroch Walk, Ballater
1020-1030 hours
Golden Eagle
Over town.
Distinctive soar over spirals of swifts.
Shape of wings, lack of light markings save for head which (via binos) shone pure gold in strong sun.
Distinctive bend of wingspan to glide at speed.
A local shop owner commented that this was the first he'd seen over the town but he had seen one over a sloping ridge to the south of the town about two months ago.

Brünnich's Guillemot, Anstruther

Postby Alex Shepherd » Tue Sep 27, 2016 8:30 pm

Date & Time: Tuesday September 27th 2016 - 1200hrs

Species: Brünnich's Guillemot

Details: A Brünnich's Guillemot for it's second full day in the harbour at Anstruther and despite the strong wind and it diving a often we still got good views of a very rare vagrant from the Arctic Regions. If the wind calms and the forecast says it will seeing the bird will be easy from the harbour walls or even from your car!! It's also unconcerned by the attention of many birders.

Some windswept photos from today here, http://aberbrothock.blogspot.co.uk/

Found dead at the harbour on 30/9/2016.
