Spotted Redshank - Old Harbour/Lurgies

Postby Alex Shepherd » Thu Sep 01, 2016 5:34 pm

Spotted Redshank today from the Old Harbour at the Lurgies around 1134 and not at Maryton as my report was altered by Birdguides. Two Sooty Shearwaters in 2 hours at Arbroath Cliffs late afternoon and many terns arrived as the tide ebbed.

magpies in Monifieth

Postby Barbara Grimmond » Thu Sep 01, 2016 6:07 pm

Have been hearing magpie sounds all summer from our house. Have only ever seen one magpie at a time mostly flying out from a neighbours garden,
they have quite a few large trees. This week one or two collared doves have been chasing a magpie whenever it goes near a large ash tree.
This morning we had 4 magpies on our grass and another one being chased round the ash tree by a collared dove.

Kinnordy Loch

Quite a lot of work been going on this week with the amphibious machine clearing out the channels amonng the bogbean. It is due to be finished by next wednesday I think.
Still a couple of Ospreys present as well as 3 or 4 different Marsh Harriers ( inc. some wing-tagged birds)
Around 300 Lapwing roosting out from the gullery hide with some Snipe among them.
Water Rails are being seen regularly too.
The Starling roost can be up to 500 birds with a Sparrowhawk having a go at them most nights as they come in to roost.

A short walk on the Sidlaws above Tealing Yesterday (Sunday 4th) from 5.00pm - 6.00pm and found:

Wheatear x4 (between Balcalk Farm & the TV mast on Gallow Hill, Goldfinch x50 ish (just south of the mast, enjoying plentiful thistle seeds), Meadow pipits, Linnet, Starling, Rooks, Swallows, Carrion Crow (with some grey of hooded), Robin, Pied Wagtails, Wood Pigeons, Buzzard, Wren, Whitethroat, Greater Spotted Woodpecker (between Hillside of Prieston & Coldstream @ base of Craig Owl Hill) & Magpies x3 (base of Craig Owl Hill).

Reference comment below by bwilli on wheatear; I'm also assuming wheatears where journeying south on migration.

Thank you Bob; yes, the woodpecker was a surprise, although I have seen them around Tealing before now. I used to see Magpies incredibly frequently down south, infact they were almost a pest they were so common and noisy. They certainly seem to be increasing in number here in Angus & Dundee; often see one or two in the Friary gardens in Dundee; so was pleased to see 3 in one eyefull up on Craig Owl Hill. There were 2 more later on, but I'm guessing they were two of the first 3.
I was pleased to see the wheatear so close to home too, and interested to read others also seeing them these last few days.
Every year for 10 years of living just the other side of the A90 from Tealing we've had a whitethroat and a willow warbler visit our garden for serveral days around August time. The whitethroat doesn't stay long, but the willow warbler stays for several weeks; this year we had 2 willow warblers for the last week of August. Last seen about 2nd September. A few years ago we had a redstart for 3 days too.
Notably absent from my list were house sparrow & chaffinch.
Thanks again, Stephen

Tealing where I stay i have had a young female peregrine hunting the front fields almost daily trying to pick off the abundant wood pigeons. On another note was speaking to trainee game keeper yesterday who was saying a lot of grouse shooting has been cancelled in the angus glens due to the shortage of grouse.

Med Gull

Postby Alex Shepherd » Tue Sep 13, 2016 12:42 am

The Med Gull mentioned below by Mark was present on the beach at West Links Arbroath near the paddling pool today. I'd taken a photo of it for later ID and it checked out as the Gull Mark had seen. Beware sitting on the rock armour for a closer view or photos as you'll get bitten by beasties, I did over 30 times!

Postby joncook » Wed Sep 21, 2016 10:35 am

Heavy machinery is using the field entrance where we normally park for the hide. While this is going on please park well clear of the entrance or better still below the castle. The farmer has said he will move vehicles obstructing him with a fork lift.
