Water Rails and Kingfisher

Postby Alex Shepherd » Thu Oct 13, 2016 11:48 am

Currently Water Rails are showing well in front of the Bank of Scotland Hide at the SWT Centre, Montrose Basin and if you're lucky and perhaps there at high tide a Kingfisher may also appear. Best views have been had lately in the afternoons and the hide is quiet, the Water Rails don't like noise but will even pause to feed at the edge of cover from time to time. Yesterday I was told around 60,000 Pink-footed Geese were around and a count was being made today, 13/10/2016.

21st OCTOBER 2016 Great White Egret

Postby joncook » Fri Oct 21, 2016 6:33 pm

Great White Egret at Kinnaber this pm. Found by Andrew Ferguson opposite StCyrus hide and reported by Anne Reid @ 2pm. No sign when Bob & I first arrived, but flew in downstream about 4pm. To our dismay it landed on the Aberdeenshire side, but quickly saw sense and relocated to the Angus side of the river opposite the StCyrus hide. It hunted & fed for 15mins or so before flying briefly towards Montrose. Landed out of our sight, probably on one of the pools at Kinnaber.

Great Grey Shrike - Migvie, Glenesk

Postby Alex Shepherd » Mon Oct 24, 2016 5:43 pm

Great Grey Shrike on wires at Migvie Pool which is between Tarfside and Invermark less than a mile west of Tarfside grid NO481791. Birdguides changed my report to Cairncross! Doubt it will remain but plenty of habitat nearby.
16 Fieldfares and a few Red Grouse also in the same place and more Red Grouse between Invermark and Mount Keen track at Invermark Lodge. Single Red Kite in the lower glen.

21 Twite also on wires and in the puddles north of Mains of Usan on edge of harvested carrot field and Shell Bay fence.
