Tuesday 25th October 2016 - Bittern, Twite, etc.

Postby Mark Caunt » Tue Oct 25, 2016 9:23 pm

Date & Time: Tuesday 25th October 2016
Species: Bittern, Twite
Details: A Bittern flew and landed back in cover opposite the Gullery Hide, Kinnordy. (looking straight out at the reeds to the far right) At 11:35.
Otter also showed well at 11:20am left of the lone pine tree.

Also in the last week a Merlin hunting over stubble fields near Gilchorn, North of Arbroath.
12+ Twite in the field north of the Auchmithie Football field. Goldcrests, Chiffchaffs & Blackcaps still about. Also in Auchmithie a male GS Woodpecker which is only the 3rd one Ive seen in the actual village itself in 16 years. (Not counting Ethie Woods or Windyhills area). Was going from Mushroom to Mushroom hammering the top of the 'caps' I kid you not. 1st time Ive seen this behaviour as far as I can remember.

Great White Egret - Lurgies

Postby Alex Shepherd » Fri Oct 28, 2016 7:28 pm

Date & Time: Friday 28th October 2016 - 1325 hrs

Species: Great White Egret, Blackcap

Details: A Great white Egret seen landing in reeds in the Lurgies marsh to the south of the burn, near to the dead tree. I think it had been feeding upstream on the small lagoon at the top of the field with the cattle. It was soon flushed by guns walking through the reeds and flew towards the Slunks landing near the sluice. It then moved again after gunfire from the Lurgies to the first field encountered when walking down to the hides on the Mains of Dun. Also around 20 Whoopers on the Basin, a large flock of Knot and 8 Little Grebe at the Old Harbour with the Kingfisher perched on a log in the river.

Also at Fallaw on Goose Road a covey of 14 Grey Partridge, then in a field being ploughed at Gilchorn 8 Buzzards feeding on the worms.

Auchmithie, a female Blackcap feeding on rose hips at the steps leading from the old hotel to the beach track.

A couple of photos of the Great White Egret on my blog, http://aberbrothock.blogspot.co.uk/

Velvet Scoter - slightly inland

Postby Alex Shepherd » Mon Oct 31, 2016 10:20 pm

A Velvet Scoter I first saw last week fly upstream briefly at St Cyrus Hide was still in the river estuary today at high tide, it was feeding very near the north bank upstream from the hide. Unusual for what appears to be an uninjured adult female which wasn't as wary as I thought it would be. Also in the lagoon on the south bank of the river was a Kingfisher.
