23rd MARCH 2017 Keptie Pond

Postby joncook » Thu Mar 23, 2017 10:20 pm

Three Chiffchaffs at Keptie Pond this afternoon. All appeared a similar dull grey/brown in colour with no sign of green, but the light was very poor and they were mostly silhouetted against the sky. They spent a fair bit of time feeding close together with occasional interaction and chasing, but never called or sang in over an hour, so could not be positively identified.

There were 20 waxwings outside my father's house in Thrums Gardens this morning. In some tall trees and feeding on some berries in Lindsey Street. Couldn't find the smew at Kinnordy. Did see tree sparrows, redwing, whooper swans, water rails, goosander etc. There was a sparrow hawk today over the Kirrie cemetery. Saw it there yesterday too. At Montrose base visitors centre we found a peregrine, pintail, knot, black-tailed godwits and a few green shanks.

Green Sandpiper at Murton

Postby Alex Shepherd » Fri Mar 24, 2017 9:48 pm

The previously reported Green Sandpiper is still at Murton, viewed this afternoon around 1500 from the Gladstone Hide.

A better video than I've had before of this species here, https://youtu.be/Pi4pYjKhFBE will play in 1080 HD, or https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OJtdfrc7Jwg

There were two identical Chiffchaffs at Keptie Pond today (seen together) one was definitely a Siberian as it had called, also to add confusion a Common Chiffchaff was also seen on its own away from the two.

Lintrathen Red-necked Grebe

Postby Alex Shepherd » Mon Mar 27, 2017 7:47 pm

The Red-necked Grebe is still around at Lintrathen, viewed today very close in front of the New Hide.

Northeast of Glenhead Farm, Backwater Dam on Cuilt Hill today, seventeen Ravens counted together, likely attracted by a carcass on the hill.

2 Crossbills seen at picnic area Backwater Dam, male and female, myself and Jon.

Ron Mitchell reports that the Green Sandpiper is still at Murton.

30 March 2017
Balgavies Loch
Osprey returns

!6.30: Noted crows causing a disturbance over the nest site. Shortly afterwards an Osprey flew into the dead tree adjacent to the Pine tree. it continued to be mobbed by crows and made short flights to and from the nest. Still present ay 17.10 when I left
.
Will confirm later by photo, but be warned, the distance from the hide is a bit beyond the reach of my camera.
