Auchmithie - the Den beside marker 42

This wee den had a couple of odd birds in it, but I am not very good! One was russet brown on its back and a lighter red chest and had a 'pointy face' ,it was a normal finch size. There was also two slender wee birds with forked white tails that made a completely unfamiliar noise. It needs a better man than me to find out what they were.

Quite a bit on the water besides that - a big raft of over a 100 Razorbill with a handful of guillemot as well. Plenty Kittiwake and fulmar.

For ADBC members: just a polite notice. If you hear news of a bird and haven't received an AGV text about it then it hasn't been put out. Please text your news in so that it can be passed around and all may hear about it. Thank you. Was very fortunate to receive news of the Glossy Ibis today from a non club source. Thank you very much.

Glenesk, 9/5/2017

Postby Alex Shepherd » Wed May 10, 2017 12:23 pm

A lucky find in Glenesk on Tuesday May 9th 2017. Pasted from my blog.

A very rare opportunity on a trip to Glenesk in Angus when in the middle of the day a Woodcock stepped into view within photo distance of the fenced track I was on. Also on the trip, Cuckoos at various places, heard but never seen, a single male Ring Ouzel, Tree Pipits, many Mistle and Song Thrushes, Redstarts, Red-legged Partridges, Lapwings, Curlew, Oystercatchers, Siskins, Lesser Redpoll, Bullfinch and an Osprey failing to catch a fish in three attempts. No sign of Spotted Flycatchers despite a long search.

Longer version and photos on my blog, http://aberbrothock.blogspot.co.uk/

Powmouth and Shelduck Hide

Postby Alex Shepherd » Sat May 13, 2017 1:01 pm

A rather prolonged look at Powmouth on 12/5/2017 to see what might be around for the club trip on Wednesday 17th May.

One Garden Warbler found and photographed near Powmouth, also Whitethroats, Blackcaps, Willow Warblers, Grey Wagtails, Dipper, Swallows, House Martins, and Sand Martins selecting a nest site, all on a dull cold windy day.

Shelduck Hide and track, 1 Ruff in "mixed plumage" with 2 Black-tailed Godwits, 1 Whitethroat, 1 Greenshank, Eider, Red-breasted Merganser, Sandwich Terns, Skylarks, and many Shelducks. On a previous visit on a better day, Sedge Warbler, Reed Buntings, Osprey, Little Egret all seen.

Note, the Shelduck Hide is 1 mile from the Mains of Dun car park but as usual the trip will be flexible and can be changed to suit those attending with the Lurgies and St Cyrus also options. There isn't much parking at Powmouth so car sharing will be essential from the Basin Centre.

Corrie Fee & Tealing, 13th May 2017

Snipe seen in Corrie Fee this afternoon, apparently not unusual. Also Cuckoo heard from car park by Glen Doll Ranger Base about 11.30am

There's a pond on the south side of the road that goes through Tealing; follow the road from west to east through Tealing and before you reach the crossroads where turning right would take you up to Craigowl Hill and turning left to Myreton of Claverhouse there's a pond with a Little Grebe present.
