The adult Mediterranean Gull dropped in for about five minutes on the sea in front of the Paddling Pool at West Links, Arbroath around 1445 this afternoon. It flew off towards B&Q where previous birds have roosted, maybe worth a look when the tide goes out.

St Cyrus

Postby Alex Shepherd » Mon Jul 10, 2017 6:11 pm

At St Cyrus today on the track to the hide, a juvenile Cuckoo which allowed me to approach to 6 metres, Kestrel, Stonechats, Skylarks, Linnets and Meadow Pipits, two with the Cuckoo. At the hide for only a few minutes, a Pink-footed Goose, Red-breasted Merganser, Goosander, Shelducks, Sandwich Terns and most species of Gulls.

I've put this in "Angus" as there is a club trip to St Cyrus and Fowlsheugh on Wednesday.

Kinnordy

Postby colinlamond » Wed Jul 12, 2017 12:11 pm

I have been up in Kirriemuir this past week visiting my father and been out to Kinnordy for several early morning visits.
Some mornings the skies were full of sand martins with a few house martins and swallows also present. A few swifts as well.
Most of the ducks are now in eclipse plummage and as well as the mallards i saw teal, one gadwall and some wigeon. A couple of tufted ducks were usually present.
There were lots of sedge warblers and willow warblers, a few blackcap a chiffcaff and whitethroat. A reed warbler was calling from one patch of reeds which i have not found this far north before.
I saw both the male and female marsh harrier and one young bird. A sparrowhawk and on Monday morning an osprey hunted over the loch.
Lots of reed buntings in the reeds. Water rails were vocal.
I found snipe, curlew, lapwing, redshank and oystercatchers.
One morning over the other side of the loch from the hides a few crossbills flew over.
There were tree sparrows on the feeders.

Angus Glens

Postby colinlamond » Wed Jul 12, 2017 12:21 pm

I made three trips up into the Angus Glens, two for an early morning walk and once an all day walk with my cousing.
My first trip to Glen One I found lots of a raptors. I saw a golden eagle in the distance. I watched a white dove fly up the glen and it was taken by a peregrine. The peregrine interacted with a buzzard and a merlin. Kestrels were nesting in a farm building. Found black and red grouse and lots of wading birds - curlews, oystercatcher, redshank, snipe and lapwing. I found a couple of dippers on the river and a group of goosander.
On my walk wiith my cousin I found ring ouzel and wheaters
Tuesday I walked in a third glen. As well as all the birds I observed in the other two glens I saw a short eared owl over the grouse moors, a young cuckoo and a quail was calling from a boggy area - seem to remember hearing quail up here before. I flushed a couple of woodcock in a wooded area, and also found some redstarts.
I found whinchat on one walk and several families of stonechats.
