Bittern kinnordy 1.11.15

Postby Neil Black » Fri Nov 06, 2015 3:50 pm

On Sunday about 16.30, just as the light was failing and shortly after the hides emptied of Great White Egret admirers, the Bittern suddenly jumped out to the edge of the distant reeds and performed some bizarre moves which included twisting and turning, flapping its wings, puffing out its neck and chest and then adopting the usual vertical pose but sometimes with an open beak, this routine was then repeated before it eventually flew of.
Apparently, according to the internet,

this was a threat display, presumably in order to confuse its possible attacker??? Although, considering how busy the hides were shortly before, it was more like it was taking the proverbial.
