Found this butterfly at St Cyrus NN Reserve today Sun 03/08/08. Can't figure its identity. It looks like a fritillary, but the orange 'feathering'

and white border on bottom edge of the wings is not shown in any of the butterfly books I have.

Found a huge moth (5cm) on the door of my faither’s shop (JP Whytes - Forfar)
I’m no expert (at all) but consulting a book, the best match is a ‘convolvulus hawkmoth’
Would this be right?

'Convolvulus Hawk Moth from Stephen Doig

Postby HarryB » Tue Sep 16, 2008 6:57 am

Description of the moth is as follows:
The wingspan of the Convolvulus Hawk Moth is the largest of any British insect.
Another (part of) a description is; 'A very large grey moth, with an abdomen banded in pink and black. The long proboscis is used to penetrate the flower tubes of honeysuckle and other plants. The wingspan is 5 inches.'
Apparently, it comes from the Mediterranean and 'flies as far north as Scotland and Iceland'
Information is from Readers Digest 'Field Guide to Butterflies and other insects of Britain.
Hope that helps.

Forfar Loch

Postby Dave Adam » Sun Sep 28, 2008 5:16 pm

2 Otters at West end of loch 11am. One was at the North West corner feeding - other was on South West side, both settling in reed beds.
PS. This is quite interesting as some loch otters (Kinnord on Deeside) have been found to fashion 'nest holts' from reeds that are globe shaped with a roof !

Big Cat?

Postby Dave Adam » Sat Dec 13, 2008 11:27 am

Last Sunday while hill walking in Glen Esk I found some cat tracks in snow. Front paw 6 cms - rear 4 cms - gait stride of a Labrador I reckon. Followed them for a several hundred metres - the difference between the large front paw and smaller hind paw seems similar to a European Lynx. I have talked to the person (ex-gamie) who saw a big black cat near Menmuir a couple of years ago and there was a report of someone seeing one near Rossie recently .
