Tern raft installed at Montrose

Postby Neil Mitchell » Fri Jun 06, 2008 4:12 pm

Not really a sighting but relevant anyway.
For those of you who are regulars at the reserve you'll notice a new feature in front of the SWT vistor centre. We have finally got the tern raft installed. Aimed primarily at Arctic Terns it has been funded by Glaxo in an attempt to alleviate the problems of terns at their Montrose factory.
Although I had thought it would be too late in the season for nesting success when we went out today to check the moorings less than 24hrs after installation the birds were 'nae happy' at our intrusion so we may yet see nests.
Either way I'm sure you'll find it worth a trip to the centre to see.

'Tysties' on Sunday at Fishtown of Usan

Postby HarryB » Tue Jun 17, 2008 7:52 am

Apology for my misunderstanding of the 'Black Guillemots'' report on Sunday 15TH. I believe the single bird, referred to by SRG, was the only bird seen and the information I received was second-hand (and innacurate!)

White Stork - May Update

Postby Mark Caunt » Tue Jun 17, 2008 6:02 pm

Further update today regarding the White Stork seen at Glamis and also near Forfar on the 30th-31st May 08.
Had a phone call today from Ed Thomson who saw the bird on the Friday night (30th May) before it was seen near Forfar on the Saturday (31st May).
(presuming rightly or wrongly that it was the same bird)
Apparently the bird apeared back at Glamis on the Saturday night (31st May). It showed down to six feet and had a ring on its left leg.
He has a photo on his mobile phone also.

18 June at Montrose Basin

Postby HarryB » Wed Jun 18, 2008 4:49 pm

1 adult Grey Plover and 1 young. Also (unusually for the SWT Centre) a pair of Bullfinch. All of these birds found by Graham Smith this morning, along with an Osprey.
31 young Common Redshanks and 3 Greenshanks at The Slunks and 7 male Eurasian Wigeon at Lady Erskine's Bank. A total of 19 Black-tailed Godwits in the same area, with some in breeding plumage. I wonder if these are returning, possibly non-breeders?. There were younger birds amongst the group, which makes me wonder even more if they are heading north, or returning here; posssibly after having bred.

Kinnordy - 22 June

Postby Grant Balfour » Sun Jun 22, 2008 10:50 pm

Kinnordy RSPB Reserve
10am-11.30am
Male Marsh Harrier flying over one of the marsh areas for about 5 minutes before leaving.
No Black Headed Gulls. I spoke to the RSPB volunteer and apparently all the gulls have left over the past two weeks as all the nests were robbed by the Otter(s).

Roseate Tern at Glaxo Litle Tern site 10:15 Thursday

Postby HarryB » Thu Jun 26, 2008 10:57 am

Roseate Tern again at the Little Tern site on the beach on the south east side of Glaxo Smith Kline factory.
Access through the Angus Council caravan park to the shore and also by crossing the bridge over the South Esk as you enter Montrose from the south. Turn sharp right at mini roundabout and follow signs for Glaxo Smith Kline. The access to the river is the street after the turn off to the factory. Park in the car park adjoining the river (near Bamse statue) and follow the path to the (fenced off) Little Tern site.
