A otter was showing very well infront of the centre yesterday (Sun 2nd)
The Goose Count was 11,000 although there are certainly more scared off by the fireworks in Montrose the night before.
The kingfisher was briefly on the shore in front of the centre otoday (Mon 3rd)

Red Kite in Montrose

Postby HarryB » Mon Nov 03, 2008 5:01 pm

A Red Kite has been seen just over the North Esk, in Aberdeenshire since last week.
As suggested in my last report, this bird is sometimes being seen in Angus (over Montrose Golf Course). However, I've received this information second hand.
Please report this bird to your grapevine group leader, or at least, put it out on this web page, so that others can get a chance to see it.

Wednesday 5th November 2008 - Starlings

Postby Mark Caunt » Wed Nov 05, 2008 5:59 pm

Date & Time: Wednesday 5th November 2008 - 3:55pm
Species: Starlings
Details: Not very rare I know but a flock of at least 5000+ Starlings at Balgavies loch this afternoon at 3:55pm.
Twisting and turning in a 'shoal of fish' type fashion and even looked like a tornado at one point as they plummeted in the reeds to roost. Quite a spectacle.

Waxwings at Ferryden this morning 10:00 7 November.
Rob and Maggie Noble-Nesbitt have found 70+ Waxwings at Ferryden this morning.
The birds are at the same place as yesterday (Burnside Road).
They are in the trees alongside the big green shed on the left as you drive east, from Ferryden roundabout, in Montrose, into Ferryden itself.

Winter thrushes at Montrose Basin.(Sat 08/11/08)

Postby HarryB » Sun Nov 09, 2008 9:19 am

Lots of winter thrushes at north west corner of Montrose Basin yesterday.
About 75 Fieldfare and 15 Redwing on the old railway line embankment as you walk in from SWT Old Mill Car Park to access the Wigeon and Shelduck hides. Birds were feeding heavily on Hawthorn bushes/trees. This is a consistently good area for winter thrushes. Also, 17 Long-tailed Tits there. Unusually large number of Blackbirds at the start of the path from the car park to the hides (10 together).

Heard Crossbills in the conifer plantation at the other side, but they were very high up and my neck was getting sore!!

Mickey Mellon RM Condor East 12 Nov grid 626 430. Since records started being kept for the camp 7 years ago it was very pleasing today to find a new recording, a pair of Stonechats. Hope they are around in breeding season.

Bittern at Loch of Kinnordy 12/11/08 11:20

Postby HarryB » Wed Nov 12, 2008 7:57 pm

I tried to post this message earlier, but it 'disappeared' after I posted it.
The Bittern at Loch of Kinnordy, was found at 11:20 this morning (12/11/08) by Stuart Green, who immediately notified me about it and I was able to put it out on the ADBC grapevine. Stuart's message was, that the Bittern was seen from the Gullery Hide, at RSPB Loch of Kinnordy at 11:20.
Thankfully, he was good enough to let me know, so I could circulate it on the club grapevine.
It would be more than helpful if grapevine members would let their grapevine group leaders know about rare, scarce, or interesting birds in our area. That way, the news can be circulated round our grapevine and everyone would get a chance to see them.
Please also let Birdline Scotland know of birds in that category.
