White Stork Report today and yesterday (5th and 6th April)

Postby HarryB » Mon Apr 06, 2009 5:29 pm

A report of a White Stork at Stracathro yesterday and again flying in the Glamis area this morning, produced the following information.
A young woman appeared at the SWT Centre Montrose today, with a picture of a White Stork, which she took on her phone, yesterday at Stracathro. The very clear picture did not show any rings on either leg, but the bird was very tolerant of her presence. It was mobbed by gulls and departed Stracathro last night, flying in a southerly direction about 18.00.
This was followed by a report, this morning, that a White Stork was seen flying towards the Glamis area.
I understand that this sighting was followed up by B McC, SRG and GS, who were all notified about the possible presence of the bird in the area.
No futher information has been forthcoming since then (about 10.00 this morning). Presumably it has not been seen again.
Needless to say, if this bird is re-found, please notify any grapevine group leader, so the information can be circulated.

Sorry, don't know where you're geting your info from, but I did NOT follow this sighting up, I have been at work all day, then variously walking dogs/feeding and looking after kids thereafter.
Cheers, SRG

Apologies to SRG. I understood that he and two others were each engaged in a search of the area, based on a text message I received about the bird.
Sorry Stuart.

Hen Harrier

Male Hen Harrier quartering a local Glen on Saturday close to 'the big house'.

Should I keep quite about the location or tell everyone, I cannot decide which would be best for the bird as I am sure the keeper will of seen it by now.

I know - protect by common knowledge sort of thing - best to keep location secret in spring. At this time of year keepers are on Harrier patrol !

Would it be worth a call to the Tayside Wildlife Crime Officer, Alan Stewart on 01738 892650 just in case he is not aware of the bird's location? He seems very approachable.

I have just had a Magpie at the bottom of my garden!!! This is a great garden tick for me, I knew there were a couple down at Barry Buddon but you almost never see them in the town itself. I managed one photo before it flew away.

Re. Hen Harrier.
Ian. Would you please contact Mike Groves at "mjgroves@hotmail.com" asap.
He is the Tayside Raptor Study Group co-ordinator for
Hen Harriers in Angus.
Although TRSG members cover the bulk of the area, they can't be
certain to find all the sites so information like this is really useful.
Thanks, Mike Nicoll.

Sunday 12 April - Grasshopper Warbler!! - Mill of Morphie 2015 - 2045.

An amazingly early grasshopper warbler "reeling" away in the long grass/shrubs behind my house. Would never have heard it but for my visiting grandson who called me out of the house to hear the "loud insect". I know it has been a nice weekend - but wow!

2 Swallows were flying around Edzell Castle today ( a week earlier than their usual arrival date, according to the custodian), with a Willow Warbler singing in the background. Spring, it seems, has sprung.

Marsh harrier; Monday 13th April

Postby simonbusuttil » Mon Apr 13, 2009 4:39 pm

A marsh harrier drifted south between Rossie and Montrose (just west of A92) at ca 1pm today

Several non-birdy people have mentioned the previously discussed white stork to me. It was seen over Laurencekirk on the Sunday attracting a bit of attention from the local herring gulls and was claimed to have been circling the church tower !

Hi there sorry this is late but Friday 9th at Kingennie fishery grid 478365 an Osprey turned up doing the rounds of the ponds. As it was windy, fishing was hard and the bird hovered a few times without making any dives for fish, then left and flew north towards Forfar.
