Thanks for the reply re magpies. I wasn't suggesting that magpies hadn't been seen at all just that I hadn't ever seen them here in Ferryden village foraging in our gardens. I've seen them at Kinnaber too and on the hill above Courthill farm in years gone by but such pairs have been isolated examples and magpies have always remained very rare and localised in this part of Angus. I thought this new behaviour deserved a mention.

April 19th 1600hr Osprey (1). At Balgavies Loch. Perched on the dead tree in the middle of the loch for about an hour then flew off west.

Heard a Chiffchaff this morning up in Shanwell Wood just beside the Carnoustie High School. Also a couple of Willow Warblers, Great Spotted Woodpecker seen in its nest hole, two pairs of Bullfinches, a pair of Long-tailed Tits collecting nesting material and lots more!

1 Grasshopper Warbler and 4 Whitethroat on South Esk yesterday (Sat 25/04/09).
G Warbler on north side of river just upstream from Slunks (NO 673580) and calling well.
4 Black-tailed Godwit coming well into breeding plumage on point known as Lady Erskine's Bank.This is the point and small tidal island on opposite bank as you walk upstream from Old Montrose Pier.

Common Sandpiper - Southesk

April 26th. 19:00. Common Sandpiper (2 possibly 3) near the footbridge over the River Southesk (just down from Balbirnie Mill).

There were also a couple of Dippers and, on a nearby pond, a pair of Mallard with 7 ducklings (the first I've seen this year).

Peregrine, Wheatear, Sand Martin, Swallow and House Martin at Arbroath Cliffs.
Willow Warbler, Yellowhammer and Puffins at Auchmithie.
Wheatear, Dunlin, Shelduck, Reed Bunting, Turnstone (also possible White Wagtail) at Easthaven (and towards sewage plant).

2 juv ravens on lundie craggs today ,the male has been aggressive to walkers for a few weeks and i suspected the young were about today was the first time ive seen young ravens,i also had my first cuckoo of the year here, the bird was sitting calling on the wires at the top of the craggs being mobbed by meadow pipits,other birds seen were mistle thrush/swallow/buzzard/chaffinch/pheasant
