Watch out for White Wagtails

Postby Clive McKay » Tue Sep 01, 2009 7:02 pm

Lots of White Wags about at the moment. Saw at least 10 on Sunday at Hatton/East Haven, and there's one near my house in Glenisla as I write.

Visible migrants >SW at Hatton on Sunday 31 Aug - 3,100 Mipits, 1 Osprey, 53 alba wagtails, 29 Grey Wags. Also 4 Little Gulls came over from inland - a bit odd.

Cheers

Clive

4th Sept, Marsh Harrier, Loch of Kinnordy

Postby Hannah Morton » Fri Sep 04, 2009 4:35 pm

Various sightings of marsh harrier over the last week or so, I've certainly seen a female around and have had reports of a 2nd female, a male and a juv at different times.

The reserve paths are badly flooded at the moment, and may remain so in parts for a while, so pick your footwear carefully. Much more rain and the boardwalk towards swamp hide will be under water.

The reserve will also be closed for 2 Saturday mornings this month: 12th and 26th.

Sanderling or Little Stint?

Postby jcooper » Sat Sep 05, 2009 9:03 am

Approx 20 Turnstone on BF beach, adjacent to Barnhill rock gardens (at the bottom of the semi-circular steps leading down to the beach) plus 9 Sanderling or Little Stint - I can't tell them apart (I have photos if anyone else wants a go).
There were also a couple of Redshank. Some of the Turnstone showing breeding plumage, very colourful. Easy to get close-up for a photo if you go when it's raining and walk slowly.

Early Morning. Doing an early paper round, 0600, in the rural areas of Arbroath on the local farms you come to realise how wonderful nature is. Hares, foxes, deer, field mice and bats all buzzing around until you pass in the van. At RM Condor this morning grid 6616439 on the fencing wire I found over 100 Swallows roosting, went back later but they had moved on. In Colliston grid 606442 I found 40 house Sparrows. Can't until next year for the very early morning and see what more can be found.

BLACKBURNIAN WARBLER. For anyone who does not read the Daily Mail or have not hear, this warbler has been found on St kilda. It was spotted in a flower bed close to the helipad on the main island of Hirta. it was blown in from North America by the recent stormy weather. Happy hunting if you are venturing to try and see it

25th SEPTEMBER 2009 Pied Wagtail Roost, Dundee

Postby joncook » Fri Sep 25, 2009 10:09 pm

Huge Pied Wagtail roost on the East port Roundabout, Dundee NO407306. Birds were flying in from the east and collecting on surrounding roofs, then shortly after 7pm started diving into the trees on the roundabout. A Sparrowhawk also put in a brief appearance. Quite a sight and sound, if a tad Hitchcockian.
Pete Kinnear counted 650 birds in 10 minutes on Wednesday and a total of 1745 yesterday over 40 minutes.
