We've had a Goshawk inside our factory for 2 days flying around in the roof space,it left today at luchtime through the open roller shutter door.Had a fairly good look at it and it was not wearing any falconry furniture. It seemed quite happy even when the over head crane went by,bizzare.

Hi Burnie, Where is the factory where the Goshawk was seen?
Presumably in Angus?
Thanks

Harry,it is on the Forties road industrial estate in Montrose.I don't think it was a juvenile as they are browner, this bird was slate grey on the back.Wish I'd taken it's picture.

Wheatear Broughty Ferry

Postby jcooper » Mon Aug 24, 2009 5:49 pm

I've just come back from Broughty Ferry beach (5pm) and I'm sure I saw a wheatear. Never seen one on the beach before (it was on a rock). Its white backside caught my attention as it flew by and I waited until it landed. It was a female, according to my book. Can't make out if it was Northern or Desert (looks more like the picture of a desert). I have a wobbly video if anyone wants to see it. It was near the steps leading down to the beach - opposite Barnhill Rock gardens.

Short walk on Lunan beach showed more birds down there than I've seen in 5 years, nothing out of the ordinary except the quantity.Lots of swallows fuelling up for their long trip, seems to have been a good breeding year considering they were saying numbers are down on springwatch.

At The Lurgies this morning (before the rain)

The light was awful so I'm not sure all of what I saw!

A Kingfisher flying down the Esk.
10+ Greenshank
Ridiculous number of Heron!
Grey Wagtail
Sure I spotted a Marsh Harrier, but may be mistaken - does one bide in the area?
A funny wader next to a Redshank. Looked similar in size and seemed to have a streaky pinkish throat.

Any ideas?

A marsh harrier has been seen a few times over the last week or so, mostly over the north (far) side of swamp lochan. Please look out for wing tags if you do see any marsh harriers around.

Wheatears

Postby jcooper » Thu Aug 27, 2009 3:59 pm

More wheatears (northern females or immatures) on the beach adjacent to Tayside caravan park and at the Barry Buddon beach area. Mostly moving around on the large boulders against the dunes. One at the rocks adjacent to the caraven site and two at Barry sands.

A flock of 24 greenshank and a little egret feeding together on the Basin mud yesterday.
7 colour-ringed out of 23 greenshank checked suggests over 100 birds on or through the basin recently.
1 bird was a returning adult from 2007 which visits the basin in July before wintering further south in Lothian. Maybe with global warming it will stay on the basin this winter.
Thanks very much to all for greenshank colour-ring sightings, counts and photographs. I'll produce some numbers and a map in the winter and send to all.
Keep up the good work.
