Loch of Kinnordy - 1st Dec (morning)

Men were busy chopping down all the reeds today in the boat/tractor thing, so not many birds on the water near the hides. The male and female smew were visible from the East hide, although they were on the far side of the loch. Loads of goldeneye with a few tufties. A few whooper swans in the the mute swans too.

Not many geese, but loads of chaffinches, tits and blackbirds. A few robins, a treecreeper and the goldcrest near the Swamp hide. Also saw reed bunting and lesser redpoll. A single great spotted woodpecker was flying around too.

The equipment being used at Kinnordy will be there tomorrow and then away. It is the first of its type in the country. The views from the hides have been much improved and there is plenty of reed left ! Male smew still about at 3 pm.

7th DECEMBER 2011 Short-eared Owls Arbroath

Postby joncook » Wed Dec 07, 2011 9:58 pm

Was privileged, thanks to Mickey Mellon, to see a roost of NINE Short-eared Owls on RM Condor at sunset today. They were in long grass at the south end near Kirkton Road NO626430, potentially viewable from Kirkton Road, though not sure just where they are hunting.

Large mixed finch flock at Purgavie Farm, on Kirriemuir-Glenisla road, just below Lintrathen Loch. Field has gamecover in front of farmhouse. Chaffinch, Brambling, Tree Sparrow, Linnet, Yellowhammer, Reed Bunting etc.
4 Pochard on Lintrathen Loch, GS Woodpecker, Jays, Goldcrest and 25 Crossbill also seen.
Canada, Pinkfeet and Greylag Geese also on loch with Whooper Swans.
Greylags at Kinnordy contain a bird with a white neck-collar, too far off for me to see numbers.

An hour of nocturnal birdwatching came up with 5 Woodcock & a couple of Tawny Owls.

Harry's Map Ref NO 549638 is correct & I have advised BirdGuides who have now corrected theirs.

Egret

I arrived today at 1pm, no Egret present, what was worrying was the Farmer informed me that there were so many people present this morning they frightened it away.I then went up Lethnot, very quiet but saw 8 Black Grouse, on returning to the Egret site, it had now returned, you dont have to leave the car to view this bird, it was feeding when I arrived & still feeding when I left, it also takes no notice of cars, maybe if anybody on the Grapevine could shed some light on what happened this morning.

I was there when it flew off. At the time we had 5 cars, 2 birders outside their car chatting to the framer and me pointing a camera lens at it (from within my car).

When I arrived i was the only person there and it happily continued catching Sticklebacks as I took photos, to be honest everyone was well behaved and the people who were outside their car were well back and may well haven back in their car and leaving when it flew off. Saying that a Gery Heron would have left before the first car slowed down
