White or Pied Wagtail, maybe a juvenile?

Postby Alex Shepherd » Wed Sep 05, 2012 8:29 pm

I saw the reports of White Wagtails and wondered if this one at Montrose Beach was a White or a juvenile Pied. It was with another and a number of definite Pied which were feeding on insects killed by the slow moving cars passing by.

Hi Alex, It was suggested recently that I may have miss-identified this (thanks Hugh). Although the back colour is pale, some Pieds are like this - seems the identifying feature is the amount of grey on the flanks, Pieds having much more than White. This points to your bird being a pale Pied. There was a good article in Septembers Bird Watching magazine, which unfortunately I hadn't read when I replied to your post!

Jon
