Friday August 5th at 1450.

White-rumped Sandpiper was still on pool as previous reports but lost when horses approached. I'd think it would return

Ruff and Little Ringed Plover

Postby Alex Shepherd » Tue Aug 09, 2016 7:30 pm

Date & Time: 9th August 2016 - 1230
Location: Forfar Loch, Sailing Club spit (what little is showing in high water level)
Species: Ruff, Little Ringed Plover

One Ruff and one Little Ringed Plover on the spit at the sailing club. Elsewhere on Forfar Loch, 38 Little Grebe, 3 pairs of Great Crested Grebe, each with only one chick, has the high water again this year affected their breeding success?

Kinnordy, no sign of any of the raptors or much else but thanks to the many full feeders a selection of birds including Tree Sparrows, Siskins and Long-tailed Tits were seen at the feeding station.

Note, last week was my Montreathmont Hide rota and there was little food left, please remember and take some if you visit.

I'll post a Ruff photo here soon, http://aberbrothock.blogspot.co.uk/

Curlew Sandpipers

Postby Alex Shepherd » Thu Aug 25, 2016 12:24 am

Wednesday 24th August 2016 - 0920hrs

Rossie Spit, 7 Curlew Sandpipers on the spit after high tide this morning, more easy to pick out as many of the waders had already left including all of the Dunlin.
Redshanks, Knot, Black-tailed Godwits and Oystercatchers were the only birds remaing as the tide ebbed.

St Cyrus, 1 adult and 2 juvenile Peregrines, male and female Kestrel, Stonechats north and south of the centre, Whitethroats, 210 Canada Geese, 12 Black-tailed Godwits, Teal and 4 Greenshanks. Estimate of 3000+ gulls Cormorants and Kittiwakes on the beach being moved around by walkers.

Lurgies, c300 Canada Geese, 2 Greenshank, 2 Common Sandpiper, 1 Kingfisher and a large flock of gulls feeding on bait in the shallows.

Popped down for what turned out to be a very productive visit to Riverside Nature Park, Dundee from around 0800 till around 1330. As well as 4 species of butterfly - Meadow Brown, Red Admiral, Peacock and Green Veined White, I managed to see 52 species of bird. Started well with a rather late Swift overhead, then a Jay passed over towards Invergowrie and kept going. There were a few Tree Pipits passing over (maybe 7 or 8 in total). A Kingfisher was on the burn. Spotted a Curlew Sandpiper among the Dunlins in flight. Had good views of 2 and a Ruff on the mud as the tide came in, before something spooked almost all the waders, leaving a Ruff, Black Tailed Godwit, Curlew Sandpiper and Redshank. Photos of the Dunlin flock shows that there were at least 5 Curlew Sandpipers. 1 Black Tailed Godwit and a Bar Tailed Godwit as well. Still a few Sandwich Terns lingering. Visits by 2 Ospreys (one which had an unsuccessful dive). Saw 2 Sparrowhawks (or maybe the same one twice) being mobbed by Swallows, and by a Carrion Crow. A small flock of Canada Geese dropped in. A few Stock Doves around. A Whitethroat, Grey Wagtail, Meadow Pipit, House Martin, Chiffchaff and Willow Warblers were nice to see as well. Heard but didn't see Blackcap, Great Spotted Woodpecker and a Greenshank.

Bar Tailed Godwit, Blackbird, Black Headed Gull, Black Tailed Godwit, Blue Tit, Buzzard, Canada Goose, Carrion Crow, Chaffinch, Chiffchaff, Coal Tit, Common Gull, Cormorant, Curlew, Curlew Sandpiper, Dunlin, Dunnock, Goldfinch, Great Black Backed Gull, Grey Heron, Grey Wagtail, Herring Gull, House Martin, Jackdaw, Jay, Kingfisher, Lapwing, Lesser Black Backed Gull, Linnet, Magpie, Mallard, Meadow Pipit, Osprey, Oystercatcher, Pied Wagtail, Redshank, Robin, Feral Pigeon, Ruff, Sandwich Tern, Song Thrush, Sparrowhawk, Stock Dove, Swallow, Swift, Teal, Tree Pipit, Whitethroat, Willow Warbler, Woodpigeon, Wren, Yellowhammer.
