At Morton Lochs in Fife yesterday got a great view of a Cuckoo on the minor road heading to the car park. It was being constantly mobbed by what I think was a Meadow Pipit and kept low to the ground. It then perched on a wire before disappearing into the trees back over the other side of the road. Swans have 8 large cygnets, great place for Little Grebe, also saw Moorhen, Mallard, Grey Heron, Buzzard, the usual garden and woodland birds. Heard Chiffchaff, Willow Warbler, Blackcap. Also saw 2 Jays on the road back out.

P.S. The road is a lot better than it was a few months back, some of the pot holes have been filled in. Still a bit pot holey as you head into the trees though.

St Cyrus, Cuckoo and Stonechats

Postby Alex Shepherd » Fri Aug 08, 2014 9:14 pm

Friday 8th August 2014 - 1520

Cuckoo and Stonechats

One Cuckoo which is thought to have been around for a week or more near the salmon bothies to the north and favouring the pile of net posts. First seen on the cliffs but seems to want to return to the posts. Looks like two families of Stonechats at the graveyard one squabbling with Sedge Warblers. Usual raptors around and terns could be heard on the beach. Some butterflies about but nothing rare or unusual. Didn't have time to go to the hide but is worth a visit. Photo of the Cuckoo in the photo section.

Coire an Lochain, Cairngorms - Dippers

Postby Alex Shepherd » Wed Aug 27, 2014 11:55 am

Date & Time: Tuesday 26th August 2014 - 1200hrs

Species: Dipper, Ptarmigan, Red Grouse, Wheatear and Meadow Pipits

Details: In Coire an Lochain at an altitude of 915 metres 2 or maybe 3 Dippers in the large lochan at the foot of the corrie, I thought this was very high for Dippers? Also about 20 Ptarmigan, some looked like young moulting into adult plumage, several flights of Red Grouse, 2 Wheatear and a few Meadow Pipits.

Red backed shrike (Juv?) seen at St Cyrus Nature Resrve today (Sun 285 Sep). Seen at the first bothy past the bothy with the nissan hut style outbuilding. Was seen in the bushes next to this bothy, as well as the berry trees next to the cliffs.
