Knot, Sanderling, Great Northern and RT Diver

Postby Alex Shepherd » Tue Jul 15, 2014 7:33 pm

Date & Time: Tuesday 15th July 2014 - 1115-1415. Montrose - Kinnaber

Species: Great Northern Diver, Knot, Sanderling and many butterfly species while walking back behind the dunes. CORRECTION, the original post also had a RT Diver which was in fact another GND in breeding plumage, oops.

Details: Walked along from Montrose to Kinnaber at low tide and found one of the Great Northern Divers, a Red-throated Diver with a large group of Mergansers and 3 Sanderling still showing some breeding plumage on the tide line. There were many Common Terns and Sandwich Terns with juveniles, also various gulls. At Kinnaber, 2 Knot still showing summer plumage were feeding in the river along with 5 Common Sandpipers and 2 female Goosanders. I'd assume more would be seen at sea on the incoming tide.

Peregrine

Postby Dave Adam » Wed Jul 23, 2014 6:41 pm

Had a wonderful experience as I went to shop at Lidls round the corner from my house. I heard the nesting Herring Gull creating a fuss which can either mean Buzzard or Peregrine. Just as I turned the corner the local female Peregrine came round the corner the other way and skiffed past my head, feathers rustling in my ears......could have caught her in my Lidl's bag. She is grand looking with pale slate colours shining in the sunlight, nice to have her back as she seems to have been away for a couple of months on a peregrination, possibly teaming up with another bird elsewhere to breed, don't know.
