Loch of Kinnordy - 4th Jan

Bittern seen along edge of reeds around the lone pine from the Gullery Hide at 11am. There was a single large hole in the ice where all of the waterbirds were gathering (in front of the East hide). Mallards, goosander, goldeneye, teal, wigeon, mute and whooper swans and greylag geese.
On the way to the swamp hide were at least 5 redwigs rooting through the leaf litter, robins, blue tits, loads of chaffinches, a pair of reed buntings, a wren and a pair of bullfinches. Only a handful of swans seen and a pheasant.
Across to the East hide and feeders empty, but did see several great tits, blackbirds and robins.

Montreathmont Forest

Very brief stop - flock of ~20 birds high in the trees near the 'car park'. Mixture of goldfinches, siskin, chaffinches and a few redpolls.

Golden Eagles

Postby simonbusuttil » Sun Jan 04, 2015 8:23 pm

A good day in an Angus Glen - 3 Golden Eagles in the area - a full breeding plumage adult and earlier, two sub-adults together. Another sighting at extreme height was too high to discern whether it was one of these three or another bird. These three birds in an area where there was a first calendar year bird on 29th Dec.

Black Redstart, Montrose

Postby Alex Shepherd » Wed Jan 14, 2015 5:28 pm

The Black Redstart was in the rear alley of the house on the corner of California Street, the one with the "turret" at 1210 today, perhaps where it roosts or shelters given the weather. The camera was set up for inflight shots at 1/1000th, oops!

Kinnordy Loch 4pm

Had an interesting encounter with a Water Rail this afternoon on the path between the Gullery Hide and Swamp Hide. At first I thought it was one of the Redwings hunting for food among the leaves but it was a Water Rail, it came to within 6ft of me standing still on the path. Probably the furthest from water that i;ve seen one.
