Harlequin Drake

Postby Alex Shepherd » Thu Jan 08, 2015 8:51 pm

I'd seen the reports on BirdGuides and went up to Seaton Park today where it had been seen on Wednesday, it was still in the area behind the toilet block and stayed around most of the day. The latest report was it flew downstream at 1545. It seems to favour that area and if there tomorrow I'm sure it will be reported again. The bird is a 1st winter drake and not quite the stunning adult printed by some of the press but still worth seeing.

Two of the video clips from today, both will play in HD if selected.

Hooded Crow, Laurencekirk

Postby Alex Shepherd » Sun May 03, 2015 1:30 am

A Hooded Crow on cereal fields near Mains of Newton 2km short of Laurencekirk on the Marykirk to Laurencekirk road at 1030 on Saturday 2/5/2015, later seen on a fence post at the side of the A90 on the Laurencekirk boundary. Perhaps the same bird seen on a few occasions in Angus and the Mearns? Video from 200 metres at 100 times zoom on Canon SX50, poor even when HD selected! http://youtu.be/CWdwSUFMBYc

King Eider and Whimbrels, Newburgh

Postby Alex Shepherd » Mon May 04, 2015 8:46 pm

Date & Time: Monday 4th may 2015 - 1030

Species: King Eider, Whimbrel

Details: King Eider Drake showing well at end of Inch Road in Newburgh, Aberdeenshire at "The Inches" and 43 Whimbrel flew in to the Snub area upstream of the road bridge beating the largest group I've seen by 37 birds. Large numbers of Whimbrel, one report of 524 roosting at a site in Lancs are on the move north so worthwhile searching the likely spots just now.
The Ternery on the north bank of the estuary looks to be holding hundreds of Sandwich Terns, Common Terns and perhaps Little Terns but too far for me to be sure.

Videos best viewed in HD 1080 (change settings bottom right on YouTube) or on an internet connected TV;

AGV:
Wed 3rd Jun
Aberdeenshire News:
Hugh Addlesee has had a Pratincole at Loch of Skene, probably
a black-winged. The best access would appear to be from the east end of
the loch. There is a track you can take through the forest: http://streetmap.co.uk/map.srf?X=379322 ... &A=Y&Z=120

Findhorn Bay Spoonbills

Postby Alex Shepherd » Mon Jul 13, 2015 8:54 pm

A chance visit to Findhorn Bay when visiting relatives on 11/7/2015 and I was able to find the long staying Spoonbills (2). Worth a detour if in the area.

Access for viewing is from a bend between Seafield and Netherton on Waterford Road at NJ 03642 61478. A short track to the bay and then a path to the South West gave views of both birds roosting but they have been seen from the end of the track to the roost at the point where the river enters the bay. Also on the mud were two Hooded Crows and another on the streets of Forres at Pilmuir.

Also in the area, a White-rumped Sandpiper reported twice at Newburgh, last sighting in front of tin hut which is accessed from the golf club area car park.

Ring-necked Drake, The Cuilic, Pitlochry

Postby Alex Shepherd » Wed Nov 04, 2015 12:45 pm

Still being reported in Pitlochry a Ring-necked Drake on the Cuilic, a small pond on Golf Course Road in Pitlochry. Good views from the roadside and the bird seems happy enough with families feeding the resident ducks. Some photos and video on my blog taken on Sunday when I stopped on my way north.
