5th APRIL 2015 Ospreys, Balgavies

Postby joncook » Sun Apr 05, 2015 6:25 pm

Osprey pair back at Balgavies this pm, both with fish, but Greylag on nest and Ospreys showed little interest in trying to shift it, just a couple of fly-bys.

Carnoustie Golf Links

Postby Alex Shepherd » Tue Apr 07, 2015 8:34 pm

My second and short survey at Carnoustie Golf Links today which was busy with golfers, still I added 11 species to the previous 29 with Black-headed Gull, Bullfinch, Chiffchaff, Jackdaw, Lesser Black-backed Gull, Linnet, Oystercatcher, Reed Bunting, Rook, Tufted Duck and Yellowhammer.

Access is open to all club members and you can drive from the west end of Links Parade where a tarmac track heads west along to the practice area. Near the Barry Buddon fence are a number of water features and the Buddon and Burnside courses have mature trees and gorse, the Championship course is a links which is also open to members. Anyone visiting and not on BirdTrack can email me and I'll input recordings which will be used to assess the birdlife on the courses.

04/04/2015,Gella Bridge,Glen Clova, male Wheatear singing.
06/04/2015,just south of Glasslet,Glen Clova, from c.1930 to 2030, a steady trickle of Ravens flying high WSW over watershed into Glen Prosen ( and possibly over to Glen Isla ). The total count was an amazing 86. I could probably see birds crossing between 750m to c.1km to the N & S of viewpoint. How many more( if any) crossed unseen further to N or S. Wherever the roost is, it will be supplemented with more birds from further west so the roost may well total 200 or even more! Thats a lot of non-breeders!
The breeding population is steadily on the increase in Angus. Most are on cliffs but they are now moving into trees ( read Barry Shaw's post in March).I heard a couple calling near Glamis Castle on 14/02/2015. They could potentially start breeding anywhere in ANGUS. If any observers see or hear Ravens in new areas could they please contact me.
Cheers, Mike Nicoll

The last time I was at Glamis Castle (must have been about 3 or 4 years ago) me and my boyfriend both saw and heard a Raven which flew over the arboretum there.

Couple of Angus Glens today

Glen Clova - meadow pipits, hooded crow, wheatear, oystercatchers, lapwings, song & mistle thrushes, curlews, mallards, red-legged partridges and buzzards. Glen Doll car park had a pair of siskin and a long tailed tit.

Another Glen - Multiple flocks of meadow pipits flying around. Also seen were wheatears, red grouse, black grouse, mistle and song thrushes, kestrel, oystercatchers, lapwings, curlews, buzzards and red squirrels.

Also, red kite seen flying around an Angus location. The kite had a purple left wing tag, which had a white "V3" on it and a red band across the bottom. I couldn't see the right wing tag.

Must be the same Woodcock I reported on Thursday near Auchintool, it must have a death wish. Keptie Pond also has 2 Chiffchaffs and a pair of Blackcaps. Monikie, one of the Little Gulls I photographed was a 1st winter.

On Feb 27th had exactly the same experience with this woodcock at the same location.
(I remember the date because it was my wedding anniversary and we had a day out up Glen Esk)

Iceland Gull, Arbroath Harbour

Postby Alex Shepherd » Tue Apr 14, 2015 3:01 pm

An Iceland Gull is currently hanging around at the sewage works at Inchcape Park, Arbroath, where you'd park to see Purple Sandpipers near Gayfield Park. It is a bit worn, is being harried by Herring Gulls, limps a bit but doesn't want to move away. Very close views of it in flight and on the ground. I suspect if you put down some food it will come in.

Some photos of the Iceland Gull which I'm hopeful will stay around; http://aberbrothock.blogspot.co.uk
