Short-eared Owls - Elliot

Postby Alex Shepherd » Mon Nov 16, 2015 8:44 pm

Two Short-eared Owls hunting successfully over the dunes and golf course at Elliot, Arbroath this morning at 0830 - 0920 before they went into shelter from an increasing wind. Also 4 Stonechats, 1 Kestrel and 2 Reed Buntings. Dog walkers report that as many as 4 Owls have been around for two weeks but say "two adults and two young ones" which is puzzling, sexes are of similar size and young I assume would be well grown by now?

Black Redstart in Market Street, Montrose at 1300 but very elusive with plenty of places to disappear into. Roof works in the close seems to have moved it around a bit.

Short-eared Owl. Elliot. 17.11.15

Postby Neil Black » Tue Nov 17, 2015 11:12 pm

Two Short-eared Owls and possibly a glimpse of a third hunting at Elliot at about 12.30 pm today.
An unfortunate Kestrel (hard to be sure in poor light but i think it was a female) failed to keep a safe distance and was taken in flight by one of the Owls,
carried about 15-20 metres and presumably killed in the long grass.
The Owl re-appeared 5 minutes later, the Kestrel did not.

Short-eared Owls - still

Postby Alex Shepherd » Wed Nov 18, 2015 10:08 pm

Two Short-eared Owls still showing very well at 1445, virtually in the car park and near the 18th green on Arbroath Golf Course at Elliot today. Best views might just be from the 19th hole!! More on my blog and with no apologies for the saturation of owl photos on it.
