Peregrines

Postby Alex Shepherd » Mon Dec 07, 2015 1:30 am

There are currently two Peregrines being seen around Arbroath at West Seaton in a tattie field, Gayfield, and on two of the steeples near the fire station. Purple Sandpipers still at Inchcape Park and a Kingfisher near the Old Brewhouse.

Peregrine and some older photos on my blog, http://aberbrothock.blogspot.co.uk/ with a link to a video of the bird "expelling" pellets!

City Quay, Dundee, Sunday 6/12/15

Red Throated Diver ('Dave') still there with what looks like a bit more feather growth on the damaged wing than previous years. 2 drake Red Breasted Mergansers, 1 Little Grebe and 1 probable 'Sinensis' race Cormorant.

Swannie Ponds, Dundee, Sunday 6/12/15

Green JN69 Black Headed Gull ringed in 2014 in Norway as a chick back for a second winter. Mistle Thrush and Redwings on the island.

Short-eared Owls - Elliot

Postby Alex Shepherd » Fri Dec 11, 2015 10:43 pm

Still two and maybe more Short-eared Owls at Elliot near Arbroath today, hunting at 1200 and again at 1400 onwards. Best seen from near the car park without chasing around the golf course or dunes. I'll add a video later once I've edited out the shaky bits.

winter birds

Postby simonbusuttil » Sun Dec 13, 2015 3:38 pm

A 3 hr walk from Montrose via Scurdienss to Usan and return produced just over 50 species. Montrose Bay is remarkably quiet with plentiful cormorants but little else (e.g. just one red-throated diver).

ca 26 snow buntings flying around the big stubble field behind the lighthouse and a 1st winter Glaucous Gull on a rising tide in the middle of the Basin at ca 1315 were the highlights

Barry Buddon; very quiet but a Short-eared Owl at the inland end of Spion Kop Road and a Merlin near the lighthouses. Also Fieldfare, Stonechat and Long-tailed Tits.

Tuesday evening 22/12/2015. Barn owl seen in trees at Dunninald crossroads on the Ferryden to Lunan road.

Smew, Pochard and Kingfisher

Postby Alex Shepherd » Sun Dec 27, 2015 9:43 pm

The drake Smew is still at the North Pond Monikie along with 3 Pochard, (two drakes and a duck) and a Kingfisher is also in that vicinity. The park as expected was busy.

The Inchcape Park area at Arbroath Harbour had 11 Purple Sandpipers, 35 Redshanks, 21 Turnstones and 8 Knot as recorded on a NEWS survey this afternoon near high tide, the low tide survey at sunrise produced no waders, a Cormorant and some gulls!

Smew video and Pochards on my YouTube, here https://www.youtube.com/user/eckshepherd/videos, December's photos here, http://aberbrothock.blogspot.co.uk/

Waxwings - Montrose

Postby Alex Shepherd » Tue Dec 29, 2015 9:51 pm

Three Waxwings for second or third day in trees opposite Guthrie Brothers Garage in Montrose. They were in trees at the roundabout at the east end of Newhame Road and North Esk Road. They didn't appear easily spooked with people walking by and traffic and there looks to be enough berries for one or two more days.
