Mediterranean Gulls, Lintrathen

Post by Clive McKay »

Loch of Lintrathen gull roost, 17th March

Roost appeared bigger than last count on 9th, but impossible to count due to strong wind and birds spread out right across the loch. Birds constantly repositioning themselves gave better chance to scan through them in flight - producing 2 Mediterranean Gulls (1st Winter and 2nd Winter) - my first at the roost, but following on from a report of 1st Winter near the loch last week. I could only see about half of the roost flock, so there's no telling what else might have been out there...

Also
4 LBBGull
8+ Herring
c.5,000 Common Gull
c.5,000 Black-headed Gull

Short-eared Owl and female Peregrine at SWT Montrose

Post by HarryB »

A Short-eared Owl at 05:40 this morning in front of the SWT Centre, hunting into the strong wind and heading left along the shore.
Also later, a female Peregrine Falcon, again slowed by the very strong wind and giving terrific views over the bird feeding area at the centre (approximately 07:00)
A very high number of gulls in the Lurgies area of the South Esk. Seen from SWT Centre window.

Montrose WeBS

Post by Neil Mitchell »

Hi all, here's a summary of species from Sundays(18th) WeBs and Goose Count.

only 3,200 Pinks in the morning

The WebS
4 Grey heron
68 Mute Swan
7 Whoopers - Seems to have been a big movement of Whoopers off the Basin this weekend.
7 Greylag
2 Barnacle geese
302 Shelduck
786 Wigeon
71 Teal
32 Mallard
58 Pintail
6 Scaup
603 Eider
21 Goldeneye
28 RB Merganser
1 Moorhen
579 Otysercatcher
2 Grey Plover
17 Lapwing
141 Knot
4 Dunlin
19 Black T Godwit
23 Bar T Godwit
446 Curlew
563 Redshank
2 Greenshank
5 Turnstone
1 BH Gull
30 Common Gull
78 Herring Gull
2 GBB Gull

Numbers of some species are slightly down most noticably Eider and Wigeon this may in part be due to weather conditions on the day which were particularly windy and could well have resulted in undercounting of species well out into the basin due to the choppy conditions.

Thanks to all those who were up bright and early for the geese and braved the weather for the WeBS.

Angus Glen

Post by Dave Adam »

Fantastic aerial courtship displays today from Peregrines, must be the spring weather. Tiercels dive bombing, seemingly uninterested hens, from beautiful high rise loops. Their white breasts shining in the sun. (Pretty healthy population I am pleased to say). Ravens seem to be well into nesting right now, fewer numbers than in the lower glen . Stonechats at higher scree slopes now. No Ring Ouzels yet. Plenty of Meadow Pipits. 2 Red Grouse put up in 6 miles. Couple of big herds of Red Deer hinds (150) Quite a few mating frogs croaking in marsh ponds. 4 Wigeon, 15 Oystercatcher, 2 Curlew, 2 Cormorants, 2 Teal and Snipe calling with their characteristic scraping out an alluminium pot sound! Lack of Lapwings here but further down there are a few. Purple Saxifrage out now and a first for me, a singing Pied Wagtail, rather nice it was too!.
