Black-tailed Godwit - Passage Sightings

As you will have noticed a number of Black-tailed Godwits are passing through our county and indeed many parts of Scotland in the last few days - They are heading to the breeding grounds in Iceland. Some birds have been colour-ringed (two seen at Kinnordy today)

Black-tailed Godwits (117) at 1700hrs, only (67 remained by (1725hrs). also Osprey seen several times today and on birdguides there was an Iceland Gull reported around lunchtime.

47 Black tailed Godwits most in or entering full summer plummage on Rossie Spit, no colour rings. Also 2 knot and 4 Sandwich Terns first thing today

Seen my first 2 Swallows of the year today not far from Scryne on the Dundee to Arbroath road on one of the telegraph wires. Great to see them back!

Glen Esk 26 April

1 Common Sand and 3 lost Pink-feet in the mist and rain at the top of Glen Isla yesterday.

1 Short-eared Owl in Glen Esk today. Good views of very tame flock of 25 Black-tailed Godwits in roadside field with Highland Cows at west of Kinnordy reserve.

Wheatear in field south of Ferryden. Sandwich Tern heading North. Cormorants starting to nest, bringing in sea weed to pinnacles. 4-5 Dolphins heading North. Lots of House Martins and Fulmars on cliffs. Male Eider in eclipse- first for me-thought I had discovered something rare!

Grasshopper Warbler

1 Grasshopper Warbler today (Sat) seen and heard in reed beeds before Shelduck Hide, Montrose Basin.
(Not trying to out do Bob, but had a Whitethroat at Hatton on Monday 23rd April!)

Marsh Harrier

Female Marsh Harrier at Lurgies today (Sun) - spent 1/2 hr at least quartering over reeds, getting mobbed by several crows. Appeared to have a yellow/light green wing tag on left wing.

Many Swallows swooping about the treetops getting flies this afternoon near Shanwell Cemetery. Also spotted a Whitethroat singing away in a small tree down a nearby lane.
