CURLEW SANDPIPER at GLAXO /Little Tern site

Postby HarryB » Sun Jun 03, 2007 9:07 am

Last night and this morning (Sunday 3June) there was/is a Curlew Sandpiper at the Little Tern site, behind the Glaxo Montrose factory.
This area is fenced off to protect the Little Terns' nesting site, but the Curlew Sandpiper can be seen easily WITHOUT ENTERING THE LITTLE TERN NESTING SITE!!!
Last weekend, a local birder, who definitely SHOULD have known better, was found wandering about in the middle of this ternery.
NO ONE is so special that they can do this to this Schedule 1 nest site.
There are people there, who are in place to protect these birds. The fence is to keep all of us from entering.
It shouldn't be necessary to say this to any birder - but there's always one - - - - !
The Curlew Sandpipers were reported on each occasion, by Hughie Bell.

PEctoral Sand

Postby Clive McKay » Wed Jun 06, 2007 1:38 pm

6 June, Loch of Lintrathen

Got a nice surprose today when I "found" a Pec Sand in the NW corner of the loch, only to discover it was first reported on Monday. Still, at least it gets onto my "found in Angus" list.

Two broods of Shelduck here is first I've known of them breeding, but this is only my second year here. Does anyone know of previous breeding at Lintrathen?

Also first signs of autumn - failed/non-breeding Oycs starting to gather on the loch - 40 today.

Cheers

Clive

I intended visiting kinnordy today but with dundee surrounded by mist i visited the sidlaws and surrounding areas, the cuckoo is still calling at the car park at ballkello, at the base there are some linnets and some other small birds calling, half way up i counted four male stonchats , plus one female which landed on a wire fence about five feet from me, im sure birds know when you are not carrying a camera, ,i also saw a buzzard being mobbed by both a kestrel and a crow, the crow was in front of the kestrel first then the order changed, once near the top it got very quiet, one hunting kestrel, two startled grouse , and a calling curlew, a pair of jays has bred sucssefully last two years but it looks like they have not returned this year

Postby HarryB » Wed Jun 13, 2007 6:43 pm

Bob McCurley has phoned me to let everyone know, the Temmink's Stint is again at Murton Wildlfe Reserve. The main car park is just west of the Kookaburra Restaurant on the Montrose/ Forfar road, just before the golf course.
If the car park is closed, club member can park with care, in the vicinity of The Steading at Murton.

Postby HarryB » Sun Jun 17, 2007 6:10 pm

During WeBS Count this afternoon a Common Greenshanks was heard by various counters in the Lurgies area. Also, the Little Egret was re-found, perching in a tree, in the Maryton Bay area, when it descended to the Basin shore and joined 11 Grey Herons.
This all happened about 16.30.

Also saw Hugh Bells Rosy Tern at 9:30-45 at least, Cracking adult with nice pink flush and 2 rings one on each leg. Any ideas anyone where this would be ringed from?
Was on the foreshore in front of the little ternery mixing with other terns.

June 25th ROSEATE TERN

Postby Bob McCurley » Mon Jun 25, 2007 6:04 pm

25TH jUNE ROSEATE TERN ADULT 11-10 am. at Little Tern site

managed to see it after a long wait - well worth it !

Ref. Marks query , Evidently the Biggest Roseate Site is at
Rockabill , Co. Dublin in Ireland ( 677 Nests there in 2004 ) and when ringing the birds they evidently put a ring on both legs -- we found this out when a Roseate with both legs ringed appeared at the Fire Station at Montrose ,on June 20th 2000 , ( ONLY 5 DAYS DIFFERENCE ! ) after enquiries we were given this info.
