Ring-billed Gull

Postby Hugh Bell » Sat Nov 04, 2006 6:37 pm

Thanks Harry for the post, just to quantify this, the bird was a cracking adult winter bird. I am pretty sure I saw the same bid yesterday, in fading light and distantly. It stood out yesterday because of it's longer legs, then it was head on and while preening showed a stonking black band on the bill. I say this because it may mean it will hang around for a while, best looked for from about 15:00hrs.

Red-crested Pochard - 4th Nov

Postby Chris Stamp » Sun Nov 05, 2006 10:17 pm

The Red-crested Pochard was in front of the SWT hide at Loch of Lintrathen on Saturday. It had pink on its bill - doesn't this indicate it is a female rather than juvenile?

Also around 100 whooper swans, large numbers of ducks and some geese.

Barn Owl sightings

Postby Hugh Bell » Sun Nov 19, 2006 3:11 am

Have been informed of regular sightings of Barn Owl in the vicinity of Rossie/Rossie woods over the last month. A lone bird has been seen hunting up and down both the roads that lead to Rossie school every weekend round about midnight. Last sighting was this evening (18th) about 20:00hrs at NO679546 nr West Mains of Rossie. The bird was also watched for about half an hour at 1 am the same day (ie 18th) at NO675535 nr Gightyburn. Both these sightings were made by different individuals driving on different roads but if you look on the map they are very close to each other. I have not looked for the bird myself yet but did see it on the road comming back from the last ADBC meeting? which I think I posted.

Bonaparte's Gull at Lunan Bay today (20/11/06 pm)

Postby HarryB » Mon Nov 20, 2006 6:49 pm

Hi All,
Once again, the Bonaparte's Gull has been seen at Lunan Bay (per Hughie Bell) this afternoon.
This is an important bird, but after this message, it will not be circulated round the grapevines, simply because, if it is the same one as last year's, it will probably stay in this area all winter and be seen regularly.
However, please put it on this website every time it is seen, in order that those who have not seen it, will have some idea of its whereabouts and can go for it as and when they wish.
Thanks.
If anyone feels strongly about this method of dealing with sightings of this bird, let me know and I'll endeavour to make sure you are personally told about it by phone/text.
