Lethnot, West water, and Glen esk
An unusually quiet day's birding. Comparing these areas from years gone by we noted a distinct reduction in numbers and species. Peewit for example - only one pair seen on road up to Hunthill lodge. Single pair of ravens seen on same stretch of road. A couple of herons lifted off from the burns as we passed through the area but very little other activity was noted. We then walked west from parking place but got no sightings of Golden eagle to-day. Wheatears present in healthy numbers but ring ousels scarce - two or three individuals seen to-day. The characteristically dark mipits of the glens were seen in abundance but whinchat numbers were down and no definite sightings of stonechat were obtained to-day. Recently fledged song thrush seen at parking place. Former sites for black grouse were also sadly empty and only a single common sandpiper was heard fro the river. Raptors were confined to a single Kestrel and three buzzards. On the way back down a small party of siskin was spotted and some very striking goldfinches. This was also formerly a stronghold for short eared owl but there was no evidence of this species today.
In Glen Esk the traditional sand martin site which was busy with birds earlier this year was now found to be deserted suggesting that breeding had failed in this former glen stronghold. No sightings in the traditional breeding areas of redstart. Car parks busy with walkers' vehicles. On the way home a male sparrowhawk was glimpsed between Hillside and Montrose.

To the attentive eye, each moment of the year has its own beauty, and in the same field, it beholds, every hour, a picture which was never seen before, and which shall never be seen again. --Ralph Waldo Emerson
